Magickal Realism (2009-2010)

[Above and below] Photographs by Charlie Murphy of the performance at Colchester Arts Centre on the 24th February 2010.

On the left is the result of an audience member’s “enhanced interrogation” of the terrorist poppet. Some of the pins were pushed in so hard that they bent, and all were thrust into the same intuitively painful places invariably targeted by real torturers: the eyes, the ears, nipples, genitals, stomach. The poppet also had a cluster of seven in the back of his head, an unwitting prediction of my “banishing” at the end of this Action:

Jean Charles de Menezes. He was wearing a heavy coat on a warm day, he was carrying a bag and his skin looked slightly too brown. Seven in the head at point blank range and one in the shoulder. No blame.”

Supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, 2009. Additional support by ArtSway’s Associates programme.
