Add the head board first and foot board last, and make the struts in between, so that you have created a bed that works for you and is strong and sturdy. Murphy beds are great space savers, making them perfect as guest beds and for use in small multifunctional spaces. Size: When we say size, we're referring both to the Murphy bed and the mattress. Regarding the former, know that Murphy beds are often a touch taller than they are long, so if you're dealing with low ceilings, be sure to measure before investing in your new bed. Otherwise, opt for Murphy beds that pull or fold out as opposed to down. Equally as important as the frame size is the mattress size. Most of the options on our list are available in both queen and full, but since you're already saving space by employing a Murphy bed, we suggest going with the queen. Most murphy beds come as a complete kit. You don’t need to retrofit your wall. This standalone design is the best and most convenient for many people. Start by building the inner frame. You will want to measure out your space to ensure that you have enough room to fit your chosen bed frame before you start this project! The side rails will need to be curved to ensure the bed fits into the space well – you can find templates online to help you do this.

You may wish to provide your own mattress foundation locally. Some mattress companies offer this product for immediate delivery. Some users also may wish to create their own base using 13mm or 19mm (1/2” or 3/4”) plywood. A cut list for this option is located with the cabinet cut list. The main disadvantage of this design is that it takes up more wall space. But it’s the only option you have if the room doesn’t allow a horizontal fold. c. Opening mechanism: Pistons vs. Springs Some Murphy beds are more substantial than your typical bed frame and come with additional shelves or drawers. These designs can measure upward of 10 feet wide. Conversely, there are options that are very minimal (and space-saving!) in design, measuring just the footprint of the mattress and frame itself, like our best budget Murphy bed, the WallBedKing Vertical Wall Bed. We like this option for its smaller size and lightweight frame. This style of Murphy bed even allows you to customize your space with a different cabinet enclosure. He first patented the design in 1900, and legend has it that he invented it to make his affair with an opera singer more socially acceptable – if he could fold away his bed, then it would be less frowned upon that he had an unchaperoned woman in his room!

The mattress selected - up to 300mm (12”) height - is then installed and held in place with the nylon webbing strap provided. You can go for a traditional or vintage design or opt for something with a more modern and minimalist style.
