Less is definitely more in this sharply written one sitting whodunnit populated with characters that gleam as much the polished steel tower they live—and kill—in. I think it’s fair to say that John Hannah isn’t who many people envisage as Rebus but I thought he played the character well anyway and gave quite an in-depth look into Rebus’s inner thoughts and feelings. Rankin is a sublime storyteller and as you read you gain a detailed picture of so many of the characters.

The story is a web of interlinked elements that are complex enough to tease the brain and yet in Rankin’s hands it’s all so well told that it seems to fit seamlessly together. Siobhan is doing a stellar job, working cases, and occasionally sharing info with Rebus who regularly interferes in his own helpful way.
