About this deal

I loved the scene setting, the characters, the dialogue, the focus on sign language and the whole plot was really interesting.

In between these meetings we have Robert’s trips to Glasgow which take a large chunk of the book while achieving little. Little is known of the real Jean Campbell, but Smith colours in the details of her life with utter conviction, showing us a hardy, dignified soul who has undergone a terrible experience at the hands of others only too ready to take advantage of her.Instead we develope events of the plot by the POV of the characters Jean encounters, as well as the POV of Robert as he interprets her story and investigates what led to the events of 24th February 1817 and Jean's arrest. I found the subject matter explored interesting and Smith really took the time to examine the details. A time when even women who could speak, hear and communicate freely we’re not allowed to have a voice.

From festivals to healthcare, and from galleries to schools, the internet is providing services, resources and networks to connect us to each other, from the safety of our self-isolation bubbles.

Additionally, the focus on the struggles faced by deaf people that were exacerbated when compared to our modern times and the different attitudes prevailing towards them 200 years ago were also strong themes I enjoyed. The jobs of the people in the coach with him back to Edinburgh (an engineer draining Nor’ Loch, a brewer setting up in Fountainbridge); once there, the timetable of the deaf school he runs and the anticipation among the pupils for the following month’s balloon flight over Arthur’s Seat by James Sadler. Thank you to NetGalley and John Murray Press for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Alongside that, there are wonderful sensory descriptions of life at that time in urban Scotland - I can still smell the streets!Founder of Leith’s School of Food and Wine, restaurateur, journalist, novelist and now TV judge – she is one of the nation’s most respected foodies.
