Description

From the opening scenes we get to witness how the fast talking sleek Gabriel runs hustles within the prison and from there the film entertains at every turn. Part boxing flick (think Rocky) and part con thriller (think Oceans Eleven) the movie takes twists and turns where you’re never quite sure who will come out on top. Robby Gillon, the son of John Gillon, approaches the ring next, but then backs out under instructions from his father.

Doing time has proved to be a valuable learning experience where he first heard of Diggstown, the rural capital of illegal cash fighting, which, as a gambling venture, is a con artist’s dream. But Roy comes out swinging, pulverising one contender after another, leading to a final exciting bout that may decide the ownership of the town itself! Midnight Sting’ or as it’s probably better known in the US ‘Diggstown’ stars James Woods as a fast talking con-man looking to pull off a big hustle against an evil man. But it differs in that the style of the film is far from slick and sharp, it`s not about quick thinking or sleight of hand, indeed the story eschews any such plot contrivance in favour of exploiting the sheer avarice of Gillon.Gossett, Dern, and Cobb all deliver fine supporting turns, as do Oliver Platt, Orestes Matacena, and Heather Graham. No chapter selection screen, no trailer, merely the static menu screen with the same four icons as every other recent MGM back catalogue release.

It wouldn’t be a complete retro review without mentioning what doesn’t hold through to today’s standards. Please consider expanding the lead to provide an accessible overview of all important aspects of the article. The true tenth fighter is then introduced: Minoso Torres, a tough-as-nails boxer who ruled the boxing underground in the prison from which Caine was recently released.

But just when all looks lost, Caine whistles at Torres, gets his attention, straightens his tie and does a thumbs-down gesture (copying a move Gillon did earlier). They are cut short by Gillon, who notes that his son never entered the ring -– therefore, only nine fights have transpired. The film is decidedly low budget and simply made, but benefits from a good script and a stellar cast. For con artist Gabriel Caine (Woods), Diggstown is the promised land, legendary for its high-stakes boxing matches that attract high-rollers from miles around. But Roy comes out swinging, pulverizing one contender after another, leading to a final exciting bout that may decide the ownership of the town itself!
