About this deal

Hassall’s immense workload meant he often recycled ideas and many illustrations seem to mirror his own family life. Dating back to the 1910s, this Donald McGill creation captures the essence of British coastal humor. Hassall was paid 12 Guineas for his work, and the original painting hangs in the town hall at Skegness. Please note, working days are classed as Monday to Friday only, excluding UK Bank Holidays and Public Holidays for UK deliveries.

It’s widely considered to have put Skegness well and truly on the map attracting significant numbers of tourists to the seaside town. His first wife, Isabella, had died in childbirth in 1900, leaving him a widower with three young children under four, Dorothy, Ian and Isabel. The fisherman has been replaced by a flame-haired woman in a red bathing costume, who (it would) appear has had a few sherries. With her hair tied up jauntily and skipping along the beach, our ginger-haired protagonist adds an element of silliness and fun to this delightful lampooning of Skegness. In this hilarious parody of the iconic Jolly Fisherman poster, created by artist John Hassall in 1908 for the Great Northern Railway, we are transported to a seaside scene that is both whimsical and bracing. If John Hassall was king of poster artists, then Donald McGill was undoubtedly king of the saucy seaside postcard. Your walk is now complete as you head down Tower Esplanade and back to the lifeboat station where you first started. Nonetheless, Ruth was able to clean and repair Skegness, replacing the old repairs much more sensitively and consolidating the surface (to stop any more flaking). He is smoking a pipe and skipping along a beach with small puddles of sea-water and a starfish on it. This file contains additional information, probably added from the digital camera or scanner used to create or digitize it. Explore the pleasures and pastimes of the British seaside through these classic posters, charting the history of holidays at home.

These digitally enhanced posters are professionally printed with fade resistant inks on to a thick 300gsm silk poster card. Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). This print from Mary Evans Picture Library transports us back in time to an era when laughter was abundant on seaside holidays. Whilst poster paper is sometimes thinner and less durable than our other paper types, they are still ok for framing and should last many years. It is regarded as one of the most famous holiday advertisements of all time and is believed to have influenced the success of Skegness, Lincolnshire as a holiday destination. This is why we leave some small imperfections or marks that were part of the original poster to enhance the vintage feel. Sozzled or not, our spirited bather brings joy and amusement through her lighthearted antics on the sandy shores of Skegness.
