About this deal

Kinsella’s main characters are well developed—with the exception of the handsome stranger and one of Emma’s flatmates, both for very distinctive reasons—and there’s a poignancy within that adds rather than takes away from the plot because the author’s management style knows not only when to restrain an angle or move it into another direction. Jack reveals this “marketing insight” in a horrifying on-air interview and everyone watching (at the company, her friends, and family) realize he’s talking about Emma, as they were just striking up a relationship. Secrets from her mother: I lost my virginity in the spare bedroom while Mum and Dad were downstairs watching Ben-Hur.

This ending captures the same feeling as the book, but it manages to bring the story full circle, both with Emma's speech and by setting their reconciliation on a plane, bringing it back to where they met. Paul said the deal was done and dusted and all I had to do was nod and shake their hands, and even I should be able to manage that. I found the way Kinsella wrote Emma to be well-done because Emma was someone eager to achieve more, but fumbling around with getting to the “more” part, professionally and personally. Meet Emma Corrigan, a young woman with a huge heart, an irrepressible spirit, and a few little secrets.Whenever a book is adapted into a film, there's bound to be casualties left on the cutting room floor.

Because Emma is so likable a character, his putting things to rights for her is a big fat warm fuzzy for the reader. You can see she’s a really patient person judging from how she deals with her family issues, her awful coworkers, and her even more awful boss.

She ends up living for a little while in NY, Manhattan, but then 911 occurs and she doesn't make it back to Australia. She’ll never see him again, and considering the terrifying circumstances, she’s allowed to lose her mind, right? But one minor turbulent plane journey scares her into sharing all of her biggest and most shameful secrets to the man sitting next to her – She lied on her CV about having a C in her maths GSCE and she’s having doubts about her boyfriend, Connor. What the heroine Emma Corrigan thinks and how she acts is just too funny – I had to laugh out loud many times. The story has a few twists and turns, what with Connor being annoyingly persistent in questioning Emma about whom she is dating at the present moment; then, the confrontations that she has with many characters in the story, one of whom was her division’s boss. But her personal life is in a dreadful muddle and Emma is ready to cry real tears—when Jack steps in to make things all better. Jack catches Emma talking to the tabloid reporter hired by Gemma/Jemima and storms off, despite Emma protesting she'd never sell his secret.
