The first manned moon landing was in July 1969, with another in July 1971 (Apollo 15), and the fifth (of six) manned landings, Apollo 16, in April 1972. In " Crichton Kicks", it's revealed that Crichton knew phrases in the Klingon language (a real-world construct based upon a fictional language devised for Star Trek). Crichton, anticipating this response, offered a rebuttal at the close of the novel which states that a "role-reversal" story uncovers aspects of the subject that would not be seen as easily with a female protagonist.

The AAAS invited Crichton to address scientists' concerns about how they are portrayed in the media, which was delivered to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Anaheim, California on January 25, 1999.In 1976, Crichton published Eaters of the Dead, a novel about a 10th-century Muslim who travels with a group of Vikings to their settlement.
