Description

Though he carried on working for state institutions, his dissident writings ultimately led to his being removed from his post in 1945. He has lost his will to live, and eventually marries a woman that she doesn't like, and lives with her in between the furniture he bought for Maria. Maria too decides to leave Berlin to live with her mother in Prague, until Raif settles in Turkey and invites her to live with him. Madonna in a Fur Coat is a novel written by Turkish author Sabahattin Ali that was published in 1943. recreates a vanished era and dramatises a doomed relationship, and does so with verve, depth and poignancy.

She has published seven novels and numerous translations of twentieth century Turkish classics and contemporary authors including five books by the Nobel Prize-winning novelist Orhan Pamuk. During the cold war, they were translated into a number of languages in the Soviet bloc, and they are still much read in Bulgaria. He thinks that if even his Maria was going to betray him, then not another person on this Earth is worth his trust and alienizes himself from the society. When his friend reads it instead, he meets a younger Raif, sent to Berlin by his father to study the manufacture of soap.

While he works in his olive fields, his only source of joy is Maria's letters, until one day the letters stop coming. He was born in 1907 in Eğridere township (now Ardino in southern Bulgaria) of the Sanjak of Gümülcine (now Komotini in northern Greece), in the Ottoman Empire.Mocked by shallow juniors at work and derided by many members of his family, he barely seems to exist. Sabahattin Ali (1907-1948) was born in the Ottoman town of Egridere (now Ardino in southern Bulgaria). It has taken more than 70 years, says Genç, but at last Ali is having his revenge – not just in Turkish, but in English, too.
