About this deal

The contracts and architect tiles are laid out in a circle, this smacks a little of Patchwork in the way it looks. We both enjoyed the city-building aspect, although it should be noted that it is very abstract and has relatively little “feeling” of being a city builder. Each architect will have a couple of buildings placed above it, and using the resources they collect (brick, steel, gold and the wild whiskey token) the players will compete to build these buildings in a four by five grid in the centre of the roundel. In addition to resource and architect spaces, some spaces will allow the players to activate the buildings placed on the board in any row or column.

Whilst I always enjoy these head to head contests, she enjoys a much more limited subset of games to me, and so I have to make my proposed choice for any game night carefully.

This provides players with the conundrum of whether to jump ahead and get what they want but leave the other player lots of “free” moves. There is enough complexity that you won’t know who has won until you have totted things up at the end. Please note during August due to The Fringe Festival the discount at the treasure may not be available. Once built, each building belongs to one of the two players and will reward that player with more goods or end game points should their scoring requirements be met.

The architect and contract tiles are also made of thick cardboard and have a quality finish to them. This one will be coming off the shelf often on those otherwise full nights that still need a game to be played.

As soon as the sixteenth building is erected, the game ends and players score points for what they built. In slightly more detail, to set up the game, lay out a ring of town figures at random, with two of them being removed from play each game. But if I don’t build that tenement then perhaps they will, then they would get loads of points and trigger their factories themselves AND still be able to build that park. I suppose it could come across as fairly abstract; but if you’ll engage the imagination the artwork goes together really well to create a fun, if slightly dry, picture of Glasgow, Scotland. Most of them give you resources — brick, steel, or money — and you have a limit on how many resources of each type you can hold. The game will end when the 20th building has been built at which point players add up their score to determine the winner.
