About this deal

One of the previous books tried to clear the force, but still we found some rotten ones in the previous book. I kept thinking that the odds were astronomical that this one police station in all of England had three corrupt psychopaths as the DCS.

The storyline has two threads going on, only one of which I have mentioned above as this is the major tagline. Despite the plots becoming predictable and the characters unbelievable at times, I will keep on reading them because I feel I have already invested in the characters and quite enjoy an easy read every now and then. When the book opens we already know from the last one that the killer of Melanie’s sister, Gemma, years ago, has left his DNA on a victim from the previous book – a Thai woman who survived brutal injuries and captivity. The whole team are looking for the killer but Mel must stay in the background to not prejudice the case.

As always there’s some great humour mixed in with the crime stories and this is one of my favourites in the series. I've only previously read the first book in this series and I wouldn't have described myself as a fan yet. Don’t get me wrong – the writing is still good; the characters interact with each other in familiar and heart-warming ways, making the bonds they’ve developed over the years and many cases rock solid… or are they?Optional extra – have your items hand wrapped in brown paper packaging tied up with string and with their very own North East tourist tip. DCI Ryan voices what everyone is thinking “The man’s got all the charm and personality of a rainbow trout. Being from the North East, I love stories set in the area, and LJ Ross always integrates the landscapes and local attractions into her writing. This story legit had everything - memories, cameos (I see what you did LJ - and I am here for it), suspense (at one point I thought I was going to fall into the book I was so close to the page), and so much witty humour (there’s the bin, where it happened).

Mel starts looking at old and cold cases and finally pieces together who has done these vile murders. Royal Mail 48™ – the aim is to deliver your parcels within two working days, with a small minority within 3 working days upon handover in the United Kingdom. Bamburgh was super special - I spent a lot of my childhood up there so I could picture absolutely everything perfectly. However, I have to admit that I found quite a few elements of this installment reminiscent of previous ones. i’d love to see a book that doesn’t focus on past enemies coming to “attack” the found-family they have built between them.

Then the author begins the murder mysteries with one of the two murder mysteries which run concurrently throughout the story.

Maybe revealing he’s the bad guy after half the book would have kept me interested and not continually rolling my eyes at the things that kept happening. in what’s now a hugely successful series for Ross, is yet another good addition to the ongoing story of Ryan, his wife, Anna, his investigative team, Frank and his wife, Denise, Melanie and Jack… or, it would be, except I have one small gripe. When a cantankerous old woman dies at her home in the sleepy, picturesque village of Bamburgh, DCI Ryan doesn’t think much of it—except, that is, for the small matter of it having been his wife who happened to find her body.

The culprit of the cold case murder is revealed early on and is not suspected by “his fellow workers” till very near the end. For me L J Ross has let me down as a long term fan because she seems to have forgotten what makes a good murder-mystery/thriller really work. The ideas – the structure, the character, the psychopathy, the ability to fool peers and family for decades, everything, have been used not once, but twice before. Shouldn’t a newly appointed DCS wanting to make you DS on his first day in the office, after hinting Ryan isn’t bothered, make the alarms in your head go off?
