About this deal

Lovely machine, smooth and quiet am only a beginner and have done so much with the machine and learning more and more. There are only a few important stitches to choose from, and the stitch length and width settings are pre-set. We are happy to exchange or refund your purchase within 14 days providing the goods are in a fully resaleable condition. You should consult the manual for your machine to ensure that the machine is set up correctly when sewing different fabrics, and always sew test samples to get the best possible stitch quality and to achieve perfectly balanced tension. You’ll get the most important stitches, but very few stretch, overcasting (=stops fraying), and embroidery ones.

This computerised machine offers 30 stitches (adjustable length and width), a top loading bobbin and is easy to thread. You’ll need to experiment with the tension for thin jersey, silk, and chiffon, but you can create (mostly) smooth and flat seams. With a voltage of 240v we believe this machine is suitable to use in the UK, but it is always best to consult the information provided by the manufacturer (Brother) or consult a sewing machine distributor prior to purchase to ensure that the machine will work in your region if you are unsure. Here’s my blog post where I compared lots of beginner sewing machines, including mechanical and computerized ones. It’s rare that you would need two spools at the same time though, this would only be useful if you wanted to use a twin needle. My Brother innov-is a150, for example, has a consistent stitch length no matter what speed you’re going. It can quilt straight lines OK, but the machine does wander slightly to the left/right, so it’s hard to sew perfectly straight. It doesn’t matter how much you change the speed during a line of stitching, the stitches are consistent. Cuffs and narrow trouser legs most likely wouldn’t fit around the smaller arm unless their circumference is larger than 32cm.

And the lack of a handle (there is a slot for your hand to grip onto) means that I wouldn’t want to carry this machine far without a strong bag to hold it in! If for some reason your sewing machine or sewing machine accessory is faulty or not working, we welcome you to contact us as soon as possible. The LS14 sewing machine features 14 stitches including three embroidery stitches and a 4-step buttonhole. Note that the adjustable stitch width control on this model appears to be fairly limited, and may not affect all of the inbuilt stitches. I don’t have any visual or hand mobility issues, but a needle threader is still a must for me, it can shave five minutes off your prep time and get you sewing quicker! There’s nothing wrong with the blind hem stitch itself, but in practice, it’s really hard to use without a blind hem foot. I noticed the machine sounded loud and thumpy when going over humps, sometimes the backstitch lever would even rattle. This reliable, lightweight machine is great if you’re just getting started with sewing or want to make sure you can cover those basic alterations and repairs yourself. For example, this model does not have automated controls for the needle stop position, automated back tacks or automated thread trimming.
