It has all the good qualities of a condenser mic – like nuance and sensitivity – and the best of a dynamic, such as being easy to drive and having a low handling noise. With a slight compressor applied, I was able to sit back comfortably in my chair and still be heard just how I wanted to.

To be fair, the ETHOS employs a condenser capsule while my compared models are dynamic microphones and do see use beyond broadcast.You’ll also enjoy excellent directivity, as the polar pattern stays fundamentally hyper-cardioid throughout the frequency range. It's shipped in a cardboard box (a nice one, I’ll add) instead of a crafted wood box or pelican style case and is everything you’d expect from an Earthworks microphone: Beautifully machined metal, solid connectors, and when you unscrew the windscreen, you'll spot a familiar tapered capsule design at the end of the mic. In particular, the level of detail present in the initial transient is responsible for much of our sense of content, meaning, and frequency balance.
