Starmer said that having “put in the hard yards to change the Labour party”, it now had a “strong team on the pitch” in the run-up to the election that could deliver the change the country needed. In her conference speech this year she accused the Conservative party of letting down the North with false promises to deliver Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) in full. “A once-in-a-century chance to invest in public transport, to transform opportunity across the whole country, rebalance our economy, and take millions of cars off the roads, and they flunked it,” she said.

There’s also lots of fun pop culture references, and plenty of LGBTQIA representation. I really like the world Dawson has built here; it’s easy to get lost in and for someone like me that grew up watching Buffy and The Craft (and of course, Sabrina the teenage witch), the concept is very much my cup of tea. That’s probably all I can say without ruining the storyline completely but I will mention that some of the line up of characters are different in this book to the first and that definitely affected my enjoyment of it. You might be forgiven for thinking here are a bunch of people who I only kind of know about; is it really that important that they have their new jobs? But the answer is that it probably tells us quite a bit about how Keir Starmer wants to govern. The official opposition, and the shadow cabinet in particular, is expected to play the role of a ‘government in waiting’. In the event of a change of governing party, members of the shadow cabinet might expect to take up the role they have been shadowing. This does not always happen, however, and a new prime minister may decide to allocate roles to their team differently once they are in government. In 2010, for instance, David Cameron appointed shadow home secretary Chris Grayling as a minister of state in the Department for Work and Pensions, while Kenneth Clark was moved from the shadow business portfolio to become secretary of state for justice. This particular move from shadow cabinet to cabinet was more complicated than usual due to the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition.

Since becoming an MP Rayner's held a number of shadow cabinet roles, including shadow education secretary - from 2016 to 2020 - under then Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Meanwhile, Ciara takes over Nimah's life, lets in a demon for a bit to kill someone, kills Hale, discovers her memories, poisons Theo, becomes High Priestess, tries to kill off humans for a bit and then somehow we're supposed to just ignore everything she's done and accept she's here to stay now and not going to destroy the world?We’ve seen quite a lot of Keir Starmer allies - people that he’s pretty close to - elevated into more senior jobs. Pat McFadden has been given the job of shadow cabinet office minister. That’s a really important job if Labour gets into government because he’d essentially be in charge of the machinery of government.
