About this deal

Following with my common habit of assigning to each of my favorite authors an adjective, defining, in a sense, the emotion or sensation that arises deep in my breast upon reading his or her work, I cannot find a better description to ascribe Dickens with but by announcing that his work is 'delicious', and if I were to be as vivid as is possible with describing my prevalent feeling I experienced while reading this book, it would be that I felt I was softly sinking, or rather drowning, in a sea of letters, encompassing me with an overwhelming feeling of jubilation and euphoria. Dickens describes his nightly London so well, creates such an uncanny atmosphere, touches on so many themes like homelessness, social injustice, poverty, mental health, in a mere 15 pages.

Walking up the sloping Haymarket street passing Cineworld cinema on my left that is extortion to visit. La structure des phrases est complexe, et lourde, le tout ne donnant pas envie de s’y remettre le we ou après une journée de travail ! I had high hopes that this book, a minor work of non-fiction from a novelist who, to some extent, steps aside from his field, would be right up my alley. This was a replacement copy for one I already had, following the exhibition at the Museum of London on Dickens' London. The sheer joy that accompanies reading anything by the pen of Dickens is one that must not be missed by a single soul with complete disregard to their affiliation to an age group.I highly recommend this if you are new to Dickens and want to have a taste of his style, whilst nonfiction it retains a strong narrative plot throughout.

In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. I was never too tempted to read more Dickens after Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol but this has put me in the mood.

Are not all of us outside this hospital, who dream, more or less in the condition of those inside it, every night of our lives? The last piece in particular is still capable of making one stop and think, and that's the one that will particularly stay in my mind. It’s sad that there are so many preconceived ideas about YA novels, ideas that show those who speak about them, very often haven’t read any. At times I felt some of his writing was a little voyeuristic, but then he admitted to being, “unmanned” by the poverty and hunger of the children he came across, and you were once again drawn in.

His political and social opinions, and especially his affinity for children and his deep genuine empathy, displayed in these articles in the most pleasing of ways, for their cause and suffering, led me to ponder, as if I were a young child, that I walked alongside this magnificent character. Les thèmes abordés ont eu très peu de résonance en moi, bien que j’aime bcp les nouvelles avec un style très descriptif. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. A surprisingly excellent little collection of Dickens thoughts and observations on Victorian society.True realism given via vivid descriptions while Charles was strolling around the city, combined with some socioeconomic comments of how life "ought to be" instead. Following on from his father’s issue with debt his family were held in the marshalsea prison while he worked in Warren’s Blacking factory off the strand. It is, as you would expect, a beautifully written account of Dickens' night walks through the City of London, due to bouts of insomnia. These essays are touching and engaging, without the presence of that melodrama that can exhaust the reader of his fiction.

The stories stand alone by themselves and are indicative of a great and creative imagination based on real life events. Especially interesting if you know the City of London, which, though much changed by modern building, has not changed much in atmosphere at night.

His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius.
