Description

Starting in sixties London, Carmichael has some encounters which seem random with strange characters. It is revealed that this was all an elaborate trap to trick Garrett to "voluntarily" come to this hotel - he has been used like a pawn in a chess game. Hugh Griffith stands out as a splendidly eccentric bargeman and Curt Jurgens as the main Baddie is obviously relishing his role as a cultured and charming sophisticate.

Cy Endfield directed this small comedy-thriller quite some time before his epic film, "Zulu", but it was not released until some six months after that large-scale production.Sometime later Maggie goes out into the corridor to smoke a cigarette and notices two men she identifies as "secret police" that they must avoid. Not exactly the Ministry of Defence, this is the entrance to the Anatomy Building of University College London on Gower Street.

We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions.David Garrett is a professor of astrophysics at the University of Cambridge, working on tracking Russian rocket launches. Ian Carmichael, Janet Munro and Curd Jürgens star in Cy Endfield’s thriller about a Cambridge professor who becomes involved in an dangerous game of cat and mouse while trying to track down an old friend. The ill-fated Janet Munro is quite charming as the female bait used to trap Ian Carmichael's scientist. They find the life jackets have been attached to trousers, and that Garrett and Maggie faked the attempt for the island.

At that time I hadn’t seen many Endfield films, although I had a certain interest in the Blacklisted filmmakers. The Britannia public house in the background stands at the corner of Bard Road and Latimer Road W10 and was demolished to make way for the West Cross Route. Having jumped from the train when the two agents were encountered, David and Maggie say goodbye to Wilkins (Hugh Griffith) after spending the night on his narrow-boat. When Melnicker notices two individuals enter the hall he is distracted and excuses himself for the lunch break. He meets up with an old mentor and friend, Frank Melnicker, who is playing multiple games of chess at a display of simultaneous play at a temperance hall.Marek has "sold" Garrett to the Russians for his knowledge and has arranged for a submarine to come before dawn to take him away. G. Wodehouse’s genial upper-class bumbler Bertie Wooster – heads a strong cast in this comedy Cold War thriller. The difference being that there is no case of mistaken identity and being an astrophysicist, Carmichael does not need to rely on dumb luck to get himself out of a situation. Ian Carmichael - one of British cinema's most accomplished character actors and immortalised in the television role of P.

Garrett is confused by the apparently secretive way that one player, Richter, transfers the knight chess piece to Melnicker. They head down to the shore, where Garrett finds that he cannot identify the correct key to unlock a small motorboat. Maggie deliberately reads the road sign incorrectly and makes them walk in the opposite direction to where they should be going.Alongside him is the lively Janet Munro, and the two make enjoyable company as the plot carries off rather well. Directed by the BAFTA-nominated Cy Endfield, whose credits include Zulu and Hell Drivers, Hide And Seek also stars Oscar winner Hugh Griffith, Bond villain Curt Jurgens and Golden Globe-winning British actress Janet Munro; the film is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.
