Description

Tourism is very seasonal. We were doing well in the summer months, but we wanted to employ the staff whom we’d otherwise have to lay off in winter. So we looked for other things to do with the sea water and came up with sea salt. We turned up on the wrong day for the seaweed bath and they were so lovely and accommodating. Thankfully they fitted us in. This was an exceptional experience, my skin feels amazing and it was so relaxing. Welcome to the Itinerary Planner. Use this tool to build your own journey or choose from an exciting range of specially selected tours. Whilst children are welcome to join the tour, it is primarily designed for adults. The charge for 8 years plus reflects this.

Don't Miss

Since March 2015, we have been proud to offer ‘behind the scenes’ tours around TŷHalen. Our one of a kind tour is recommended for anyone interested in salt’s place in our history, culture and food, and in what makes Halen Môn Sea Salt PDO the world’s finest seasoning. Today, Halen Môn is enjoyed around the world by chefs and food lovers who marvel at the unique, flat crystalline flakes and clean taste of the Anglesey sea water, unmarred by any bitterness caused by excess calcium which can occur in other salts. Anglesey Sea Salt is derived from the Menai straits pure sea water which is naturally prefiltered through a sand bank and a mussel bank. As a testimony to the cleanliness of the water, even seahorses from the nearby zoo, which are famously fussy about their environment, take to the waters to breed. Mike led our tour and he was good at explaining the manufacturing process, with good humour. The tasting part was very interesting and really highlighted why Halen Môn salt is so good. We then bought some as well as other lovely items from their shop. We also heard very positive things from other visitors about the seaweed baths and that’s definitely on the list to try on a return visit. Led by a trained guide the tour includes a tutored salt tasting and lasts approximately 50 minutes, the experience will offer visitors a real flavour of our company, and a chance to chat with members of staff. Tours usually run twice a day, Wednesday – Sunday 11am and 3pm Authenticity’ is a word which is often over-used, however when it comes to Anglesey Sea Salt and Halen Môn, there is no other way to describe this innovation. In 1997, Alison and David Lea Wilson boiled Anglesey sea water on their Aga and unknowingly initiated a hugely successful company. They are now ambassadors for their globally renowned salt which is completely additive free and contains over 30 naturally occurring trace elements and minerals.

We did the tour with Mike. We weren’t sure what to expect and he explained the processes in great detail and answered any questions we had. There was a tasting at the end and our view of salt has totally changed and I don’t think we will use table salt again. The gin we tasted was great. The Halen Môn range has 10 salts, including one smoked over oak chips, one infused with vanilla, an Unami salt spice mixture and one made with charcoal. We are open 10am to 5pm seven days a week throughout the year, except for a 12-day closure over the Christmas and New Year period.

Every day a pipeline takes fresh seawater from the Menai Strait into the factory. Here. after filtering through sand and charcoal, the water is heated to create a concentrated brine. This is left in shallow salt pans, where crystals form and sink to the bottom. Each morning, the salt flakes are carefully harvested using large shovels. The salt crystals are then washed in a cold saturated brine process to remove any unwanted carbonates. When the crystals are dried for the final time they produce a flaky crystal sea salt, which sparkles like newly fallen snow. This year, using the pure water generated as a by-product of our sea salt harvesting process, we are the first company in Wales to offer a bespoke outdoor bathing experience, celebrating the unparalleled view. Don your costume and soak in your own warm private barrel, with mineral dense seaweed.
