And some dark things happen in this book (and in A Touch of Ruin) that I don’t think get treated with the respect or care they deserve. Someone is killing demigods, gathering weapons and instruments for killing immortals, so every Gods should take a side, The War Is Coming! Book 2 in the Hades Saga. Experience the addictive Greek myth retelling through the eyes of the God of the Underworld, Hades, as he tries to balance the demands of his position while maintaining his relationship with Persephone. They don’t seem to do a lot together, plot wise. They meet up and talk, and argue, and comfort each other, and have sex. But when stuff happens in their lives and they deal with it, they are never doing it as a team, or together at all. I loved so much about this story! Throughout the sadnesss and the anger, there was also so much love between Hades and Persephone as they worked through their respective obstacles to reach their true destiny. Intensely steamy, the fire between them reflected their all consuming love so it never seemed like too much with the sex scenes.

Seriously. It’s like Hades is typing the Sparknotes version. It’s exhausting to read because there are no pauses to ruminate on or explore anything. It’s just a race to finish the summary, with some stuff Hades does when Persephone isn’t present. The book doesn’t stay on one scene or conversation long enough for you to really care about anything that’s happening. The dialogue is what really annoyed me. It was 90% dialogue from ATOR, which, okay, whatever. But, it felt completely empty and inorganic from this POV. I’m gonna try to keep this short and sweet. This entire second story (so this book and A Touch of Ruin) feels super pointless to me and I feel like Scarlett St. Clair should’ve just skipped to the story in book three. Nothing really happens here except Hades and Persephone arguing and not knowing how to communicate with each other. Tbh it’s my opinion that Scarlett is just stretching this story for all its worth, because there’s no reason for this entire series to be seven books.

But with the spin-off series, we finally have answers! This series is so much more detailed and developed. The overall narrative is so much better! Honestly, if the author had just made the main series a dual POV so many of the issues I have with the main series wouldn't even be a problem. Unfortunately I have to read the main series before reading these books though otherwise I don't think it would make much sense. As annoying as I find Persephone's character, her perspective is necessary for the story. Hades, God of the Dead, does not take sides or bend the rules. He makes no exceptions to these values--not for god or mortal, even his lover, Persephone, Goddess of Spring. Maybe I’ll give this book another try when I’m in the mood again for reading books that have more to them than just romance but for now I only want to read romance books… Hades, the God of Death, rules the Underworld, as the lord who takes care of the all souls; he is selfless, and does not take sides or bend the rules. Hades is desperately in love with Persephone, the chemistry between them is very steamy. Persephone, is sweet, and caring of others, and she knows she has fallen in love with Hades. But though she means well, she doesn’t understand the decisions Hades makes in not helping her take care of friends and others. This causes a few fights, with Hades trying to explain that what she requests is not part of the rules, which he never bends. Throughout the book, Persephone gets mad a number of times, which caused problems for Hades; as much as knowing she was a good person, I did get annoyed with her.

And the thing I was hoping for, but didn't get is Minthe. No reaction to her plant-ification whatsoever. Perhaps it'll be in another book? I badly want to see it. Hera, Goddess of Women, wanted Hades to help overthrow Zeus. When he refused, she punished him by requiring him to successfully complete a series of seemingly impossible labors intended to sabotage his relationship with Persephone. Also, Hecate and Hermes are barely in it. 😤 They are shining stars and should have much bigger roles. I kept getting more and more irritated the further I read because this is NOT the Hades we all know and love. I don’t know who this imposter was, but he needs to go.

The labors Hades is made to perform are very unoriginal and as it turns out we’re totally unnecessary as Hades only performs three before realising that he doesn’t have to do them after all. So why have I just wasted my time reading about them when they’ve ultimately had no impact? When Hera, Goddess of Women, approaches Hades with a plan to overthrow Zeus, he declines to offer help. As punishment, Hera sentences Hades to perform a series of labors. Each feat seems more impossible than the last and draws his attention away from Persephone—whose own tragedy has left her questioning whether she can be Queen of the Underworld. Scarlett St. Clair’s sexy and addictive series continues in Hades x Persephone book 2. Persephone’s relationship with Hades is now in the public eye, but a horrible tragedy leaves her more confused than ever about her future as Hades’s queen. I felt like the whole thing with Lexa could have been avoided. I can understand how Persephone wouldn’t understand the consequences of what she wanted to do to keep Lexa alive in the beginning. But Hades told her over and over again how she was doing it for herself and not Lexa, and it was not right, and so on, and so on. But she didn’t ask questions about what he meant by that, and he didn’t go into any details even though it would have been so easy. Overall, I liked this book. It’s more than ATOR from Hades’ POV, it’s a story unto itself. And while I enjoy that in application, it also bothers me how much Hades keeps from Persephone. For two people in a committed relationship, it seems like they are at time living separate, disconnected lives. My hope is that when A Touch of Chaos comes out, its dual narration will make for a more connected relationship. Both A Touch of Ruin and A Game of Retribution highlight the growing pains in Hades and Persephone’s relationship. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to reaching A Game of Gods for more Hades adventures.

A Game of Retribution is book #2 in the A Touch of Darkness spin-off series, Hades Saga. And I'm eternally grateful that they exist because it's fixing so many issues I have with the main series. I loved Hermes too, and the friendship between him and Hades was everything, I love their interactions, he is the funniest character of them all and I love every line he said in this book. Also, I love the relationship between Hades and Hecate, she is a wise goddess who wants the best for Hades and Persephone and is one of the captains of this ship.
