Shutter Speeds: Most models’ fastest shutter speed is 1/500 but a few models are slower. Later models have a longer maximum shutter speed, up to 2 seconds. I’m after the junk drawer of point-shoots now and I’ll tell you why; as long as there is a prime lens on the camera, there’s hardly any difference in the final product I produce which is the darkroom print. I usually print 35mm snaps on 5×7 paper, it’s an enjoyable size for family photos shot with a compact camera. If I wanted to print larger or more thoughtful photos I’d use my Nikon F3 or Yashicamat 124g. Neither the EOS SLR nor the Canon Sureshot Zoom XL has the upper hand when it comes to exposure. Most of the time the two exposed very similarly. Sometimes one over or under-exposed compared to the other and sometimes it was the other way round, with no discernible pattern. Here, the Zoom XL compact (right) underexposed, but…. … in this comparison the EOS SLR (left) underexposed just as badly. Familiarise with the Basics: Before diving into advanced features, ensure you're comfortable with the basic operations of your Sure Shot. This includes understanding film loading, adjust basic settings, the shutter button, and use the viewfinder effectively. What really sets the Canon Sure Shot Tele apart from similar cameras of its era and beyond, is its lens. Or more accurately, its lens es, since it has two. And just as important as quantity, these lenses offer quality. This comes largely from an important design choice. The Sure Shot Tele’s lenses are primes (lenses of a single focal length), not zooms.

As I shoot street photography, I like a camera that doesn’t get in my way as I try to capture scenes that are here now but won’t be a second later.AF is instant, if it finds the subject. The lens doesn't move until after you press the shutter button. Albada reversed Galilean viewfinder. 0.42x magnification and 84% coverage. 33mm eye relief. Within the image area are the AF frame, close-up frame, panorama frame, green OK-to-Shoot LED (lights when focus is achieved; blinks for close-up warning, camera-shake warning, and red-eye reduction lamp ON; and turns off during flash recycling).

Since the lens doesn't retract, you never have to wait for it to erect to get ready to shoot. Likewise, you never have to worry about erectile dysfunction in later years, which is the leading cause of death in other point-and-shoots. At 70mm sharpness is still pretty good, but clearly not as sharp as it was at 50mm, and the SLR lens is noticeably sharper than the Xoom XL It’s hard to see at this small size but the SLR lens begins to get the upper hand again at 70mm The AF35ML doesn't do fill flash or slow-sync. All it does is set itself to about 1/60 and set the aperture based on the distance and film speed, regardless of the ambient light. The meter reads through the filter, so you never need to worry about filter factors for any filter except grads. With grads, you need to dial in different factors depending on through which part of the grad the meter is seeing. And I love this underwater camera, the one that I’ve spent the past few weeks shooting, just the same. It’s a fun, dead simple camera that makes great pictures (even if I’m too cowardly to use it in the ocean).

People say that there’s no such thing as a perfect camera and, perhaps, the 35mm point and shoot is the most imperfect of all. There are trade-offs to be made in so many areas: focal length, max aperture, shutter speed (max or min), size, ergonomics, features. I bet there is no camera that doesn’t disappoint in some or all of these areas. Nevertheless, some promise to approach the ideal, and this is what makes the search so alluring.

Set the film sped by pressing the release button on the lens ring and rotating until the ASA is set on top of the lens. Protective Case: Use a padded camera bag for storage and transport. This provides protection from bumps and scratches and helps to keep dust and dirt at bay.In general, I found the Zoom XL’s focus to be fast and reliable insofar as I could easily tell if the camera thought it had focused or not, and its success rate was pretty high at just over 90% so about 3 or 4 shots on a roll of 36 were out of focus (and this includes focus missed due to possible camera shake or subject movement post-focus, but also includes some where the camera definitely messed up big time). This is not as high as an SLR but is nevertheless a very respectable performance for a point and shoot. I think the success rate is due to the spot AF being calculate from quite a narrow central region, which makes focus and recomposing very straightforward. Slotted take-up spool. Advances automatically with built-in motor when the shutter button is pressed.

The final feature of the Canon Sureshot Zoom XL that should be mentioned is the little remote control that neatly slides out of the underside of the camera, allowing for all kinds of selfie goodness. The remote shutter allows you to AF at half press and at full press take a shot either instantaneously, or after a 2 second delay. The remote control slides out of the camera’s base. It’s cute and convenient. If you opt for the optional case, it slides up and down the strap. The case also has a space for a spare pair of AA cells. Body Cleaning: Wipe the camera body with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid letting dust enter the camera body, especially when changing lenses.
