About this deal

To avoid respiratory or other problems caused by exposure to dust, controls must be implemented. As per the hierarchy of control, the first consideration should be hazardous substances substituted with non-hazardous substances. Where substitution is not possible, other engineering control methods should be introduced. Some examples are: If this is the case it is time to repaint to get the finish that you were hoping to get before you started cleaning. For high traffic areas you want to consider a washable paint as this will retain its finish for longer. Use plain warm water and a soft sponge or microfibre cloth to rinse off the solution in gentle circular motions. Another possibility is to seal off the room. By connecting the air cleaner to the Heylo dust protection door DCD 3.0, you get an efficient dust protection complete system. The dust protection door seals off the working area from the white area, the air cleaner creates a negative pressure in the working area and can even, by connecting air hoses, extract the dust and dirt directly at the point of origin. The practical air purifier can also be used in mould remediation – by simply replacing the fine dust filter (F9) with a HEPA H14 filter. Dust protection is a confidence-building measure There are a number of things that can happen when using water or vacuum extraction that can stop the dust being properly controlled. Even if this does not happen, some tasks are so dusty that enough escapes into the air to still be a risk. For this reason some form of respiratory protective equipment (RPE), usually in the form of a mask, is also needed for high risk tasks such as:

Turn off the power source, then remove loose dust with an extendable duster or the extension hose on your vacuum cleaner. Alternatively, you can grab a step stool and dust both sides of the blade with a dry microfiber cloth. To capture any remaining fine particles, wet a clean microfiber cloth with a grease-cutting all-purpose cleaner and wipe down both sides of the blades once more. Remove heavy dust from ceiling, floor or appliance vents with a soft-brush vacuum attachment or electrostatic mop, like the Swiffer Sweeper). (You can also use a long-handled microfiber duster.) Then, dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe the surface. But what exactly is dust? Well, the make-up of dust depends a lot on the environment that it is in. Dust can be made up of many different particles. The amount of dust and the kinds of particles involved influence how serious the lung injury will be. For example, after the macrophages swallow silica particles, they die and give off toxic substances. These substances cause fibrous or scar tissue to form. This tissue is the body's normal way of repairing itself. However, in the case of crystalline silica so much fibrous tissue and scarring form that lung function can be impaired. The general name for this condition for fibrous tissue formation and scarring is fibrosis. The particles which cause fibrosis or scarring are called fibrogenic. When fibrosis is caused by crystalline silica, the condition is called silicosis. It is important to wear protective gear, such as a mask, gloves, and goggles when working with or around old lime plaster. This will help to prevent the inhalation of dust particles, which can cause respiratory irritation or other health problems. Before you begin, tell your walls you mean no harm. We’re not suggesting you sing to them, but it can’t hurt. As a good rule of thumb, re-painting your walls roughly every five years is enough to keep them looking in perfect shape for a very long time. How to Prevent Dusty Walls When old and crumbly lime plaster is disturbed, it can release dust particles into the air. This dust can contain various potentially harmful dust like silica and lime dust. Silica can cause lung damage and respiratory problems, and lime dust is alkaline in nature, which can cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation.

Workers can be affected from a variety of illnesses caused by dust they inhale in their work environments. For practical purposes, we limit this document to dust. We do not take into consideration combined effects arising from exposures to dusts, gases, fumes and vapours.

Dust extraction systems are typically used to improve the air quality when using tools that generate a lot of dust – and are an excellent solution for ensuring a clean, dust-free working environment. However, they don’t just keep your area clean whilst working, they improve safety and protect your machinery by removing dust and shavings. For anyone who’s ever lived in a rented flat, you’ll know that just breathing too hard on your walls can result in scuffs and stains. Matt paint is ‘flat paint’ that doesn’t reflect light. However, it’s also notoriously difficult to clean without removing it. Dusts can also come from organic chemicals (e.g., dyes, pesticides). However, in this OSH Answers document, we are only considering dust particles that cause fibrosis or allergic reactions in the lungs. We are not including chemical dusts that cause other acute toxic effects, nor long term effects such as cancer for example.
