Eur Urol. 2015 Dec;68(6):1076–82. Testosterone plays an important part in the physical make up of men’s bodies. Hormone therapy can cause you to lose some muscle tissue. This can change the way your body looks and how physically strong you feel.
The main side effects of hormone treatment are caused by their effects on testosterone. They usually go away when treatment stops. Studies have shown that radiotherapy after prostate removal surgery may increase the chances of a cure, although research is still being carried out into when it should be used after surgery. There are newer types of hormone therapy that can be used to treat some men with prostate cancer. You may hear them called new or second-generation hormone therapy. They may be used in combination with first line hormone therapy treatment, or when your prostate cancer has stopped responding other types of hormone therapy. They include abiraterone (Zytiga®), enzalutamide (Xtandi®), apalutamide (Erleada®) and darolutamide (Nubeqa®). Implants may be given as a small pellet that is placed under the skin in the abdomen and slowly releases the drug. How often will I have injections? Darolutamide (Nubeqa®) is a new type of hormone therapy. It won’t cure your prostate cancer, but it can help keep it under control. It has also been shown to give some men longer before their cancer spreads to other parts of the body (advanced prostate cancer). Find out more about darolutamide. Any surgical procedure carries risks. It's important to discuss these with your surgeon before undergoing treatment. Laparoscopy Testosterone helps to keep bones strong. Long-term hormone therapy can make your bones weaker and cause a condition called osteoporosis. This means you may be more likely to have broken bones (fractures).
