About this deal

The game is billed as a sort of science fiction procedural — think The X-Files or Twin Peaks — with a hefty dose of rural Germany and set during the 1960s. Squint hard enough and it’s the Pacific Northwest or somewhere in Maine. The biggest nod to Germany comes in the all-day buffet of warmed-over appetizers at the local hotel. Both narratively and visually, the game could be set almost anywhere you’d find mountains and pine trees. The PC version of Trüberbrook offers the same controller-based interface as the console versions. It was so buggy, however, that it was essentially unusable. We completed the game with mouse and keyboard. btf/Headup, WhisperGames

Here in these mines, there is a portal to other dimensions, called the Saturn portal. That’s where your thief is waiting for you, along with a small twist. This is the climax of the story and soon to be the end. This is where Trüberbrook missteps. If the ending of the game, or the twist, where more substantial it would make the journey feel earned. However, these two things are so inconsequential that the two endings you can choose from almost feel the same. Most disappointing of all is that the gameplay itself is merely perfunctory. In motion, Trüberbrook is achingly linear, and relies on a series of barely connected tasks. Almost nothing in the game can be described as a puzzle. It’s more of a pixel hunt, with a contextual interface that does all of the work for you. The end result is a world that’s beautiful to look at, but a game that fails to entertain in any meaningful way. Move further to the right and you will come across a brewing still. Hover over the still and interact with it, then move down to the bottom of it on the left side – you should find a tap that highlights separately to the machine. Interact with it to learn you need to light the gas.

Beauty is only skin deep

When you can, walk to the right and through to the next area. You can either simply follow the path off-screen or, once you’re close enough, move the cursor over an area right at the edge of the screen and interact with it to automatically walk there. The inventory works differently than you’d expect it to. Instead of choosing an item from your bag and using it on an object in your environment, you first select the object in the environment, then the gear, and then an item. It will also automatically combine items that need to be combined.

Hover over the MÖBIUSPALAST sign over to the right. Use the whistle on it to attract the birds and they will move over to the left a little. Hover over Tannhauser and interact with him a few times until he wakes. Answers don’t matter during the first round of questions. You arrive at the village of Trüberbrook where Dictaphone Entry 02/36 (Arrived at destination...) will automatically record. Walk over to the last building to the right – this door is just past some stairs you will be using soon. Interact with the door in this building to enter the guest house. You can also interact with the characters by talking to them. This sometimes opens up new interactions such as swapping items and reluctantly handing over your ‘external massager’ to a horny woman… Interact with the yellow dish to take a Cheese Skewer. Interact with the orange dish to collect a Worm. Now take the stairs up to your room.

Use the pot of gravy on the boat to fix the leak. Walk to the far left and exit to visit a new area. To the left of the stairs, you will see a sign over a doorway, MÖBIUSPALAST. Hover over it and use to record Dictaphone Entry 12/36 (Beverly, I discovered...).

Fast forward to daytime, where Gretchen is working on the cable car. You are tasked with returning to the village. Use the Drinking Cup on the white freezer to the right of the doorway to fill it with ice. Now use the Cup on your motorcycle.

The story told in Trüberbrook begins in 1967. American physicist Hans Tannhauser unexpectedly wins a trip to the German village of Trüberbrook, even though he does not remember taking part in any competition. He comes to the conclusion, that it will be worth taking a short rest and going on holiday. After arriving and registering in Waldeslust guesthouse he is robbed - the thief only takes away his work on physics. While searching for the culprit, Hans meets the bizarre villagers and a young anthropologist by the name Gretchen Lemke, who is the only one who seems normal. With time, Hans also starts to realize that he did not get to Trüberbrook without a reason because the future of the world will depend on him. Mechanics Go upstairs to your room. As you progress here, your actions will be interspersed with short scenes showing Gretchen’s progress (these scenes are sub-titled but there is no need to list them here). Walk to the left side of the village. To the left of the Baron is a girl at a stand. I nteract with the stand and the girl will give you a Cone of Roasted Almonds. The red-lit door on the right will open. Interact with it to head through to the final confrontation. The scene will play out, leaving you with a choice. There are achievements linked to either choice but you will be able to get them both on this playthrough. The scene will change to the village, with Tannhauser at the window above and just left of the guest house door. Above the steps between the guest house and the movie theatre, there is a clothesline with a Clothes Hanger on it you can interact with to take. Interact with the window Tannhauser is at to return to the room.
