Widow Jane does actively distill in its facility. While those barrels will not have been old enough to make it into the current 10-year blend — remember, it opened in 2012 — those barrels may eventually make it into future batches as they reach the maturation threshold. Despite being located in a “distillery,” the Widow Jane crew don’t actually seem to distill any of their own product. Which makes sense, since the company only started in 2012 and hasn’t had enough time to actually age their own 10 year old bottle of whiskey. The first year that would even be possible is 2022, a good three years from now.

The barrel-proof bourbon is aged in new charred oak barrels to develop the sweet caramel, dark chocolate, orange peel, and toasted marshmallows of the bourbon.

Aged for ten years, every bottle of this bold, rich, 100 proof bourbon lists the bottle number and when the whiskey was bottled.

Add a splash of orange bitters and the drink balances nicely. The sweetness of the liquor and the citrus of the bitters makes for a balanced drink that is downright delicious. The whiskey is a dark amber color with an almost syrupy texture, which looks incredibly appealing. The smell of the spirit is spot-on for a typical standard bourbon, with notes of toffee caramel and vanilla. Right away, I noticed that the aromas were a little muted for a ten-year-old expression. While I noticed long woody, oak scents and just a hint of vanilla, that was about it. There was more going on with the flavor on the palate, as I noticed hints of raisins, caramel corn, and just a wisp of smoke.Aging is important to bourbon because it gives the distilled spirit its distinct flavor profile and appearance. Since the bourbons aged eight to twelve taste smoother than younger and older ones, it would be better to find the best 10-year bourbon. The bourbon features a rich copper color with an aroma of buttery caramel fudge, roasted pecans, and brown spices. Willett 10 Year is a single-barrel bourbon hand selected by master craftsmen for its great flavor profile and aroma. Take one sip and the first thing you’ll notice is the distinct burning of alcohol, which is present from start to finish. It’s particularly strong for 45.5% ABV.

The bitter ginger is balanced nicely by the sweetness of the toffee and caramel flavors. But the problem here is that it might be too sweet. The liquor on its own is very sweet with the flavors within, and adding a bit of sugar in the ginger beer into the drink doesn’t help the situation. It is sweet, well spiced, and has a mellow character because it contains rye on its mash bill. 1. Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year First released in 2016 (and rebranded this year), Rebel (formerly called Rebel Yell) is a sourced whiskey. But even though Lux Row doesn’t disclose where this bourbon came from, that doesn’t mean it should be disregarded. The great thing about the Widow Jane whiskey is that it smells like an Armagnac or sherry finished but is not, which confused me to a large extent. However, Heaven Hill Distillery has aged its bourbon for a decade, and critics will agree that it is a perfectly balanced bourbon. Clyde May’s 10-Year Cask Strength bourbon is one of the best decade-old bourbons on the market today.
