It’s compact and well made, flexible and image quality is simply magnificent. It even works well with HDR, which is a feat for any projector. It’s the colours that swing it for the W1800, though. Not only did this projector slightly exceed Rec.709 in testing but colour accuracy is fantastic by projector standards, with an average Delta E of 2.89. Its only serious rival here is the Viewsonic X10-4K and that’s slightly more expensive.

Rivals have the W1800 beaten when it comes to HDR, brightness and contrast, then, but you’ll struggle to find another 4K projector at this price that delivers a more natural, cinematic image.

BenQ’s decision to focus with the W1800 on what we guess could be considered good old-fashioned home cinema values has paid off handsomely. Its pictures might not be the showiest around, but they’re refined, natural, authentic and, to use that word again, cinematic. Easy Upgrade to 4K Wonders The W1800’s excellent colour and light control plays its part, too, in making pictures exceptionally sharp and detailed for such an affordable projector. In fact, its pictures really do look like 4K, as billed. Certainly denser, more nuanced and, as a result, more three-dimensional than you would see with a regular 1080p DLP projector. This really matters, of course, when you’re talking about images as massive as those the W1800 can provide. The second is that the high brightness levels make the TK700 usable in daytime. Sure, you lose some contrast, making it hard to make much out in the murkier dungeons of Elden Ring, but otherwise all is fine. What’s more, the projector is still usable in the Smart Eco setting, which doubles the Normal lamp life of 4,000 hours without reducing the brightness levels to a daft extent. And it was the same story with every 4K HDR Blu-ray I fed into my player. Bladerunner 2049’s first few minutes aren’t quite as demanding as Solo’s, but it looks absolutely stunning on the BenQ W2700. What bright colours there are stand out superbly against the desaturated dystopian landscape. When the action moves into the darkness of the Sapper Morton’s home, that fantastic performance continues, with every shadow detail, grain of dust and wisp of steam perfectly recreated. This is crucial, as it means that you don’t feel like you’ve suddenly had your connection with what you’re watching broken every time a film shifts from a bright scene to a dark one. Such consistency is massively important for any projector that’s serious about home cinema. Delta E quantifies the difference between a reference color and the projector’s actual color based on L*a*b* coordinates to represent "a difference in sensation." Delta E<3 performance means virtually no perceptible color difference to the human eye. (Delta E<3 performance enabled in D. Cinema modes.) True 4K HDR for Grand Cinema Experiences True 4K 8.3 Million Pixel Perfection Digital rotation adjustment improves projection flexibility, even on uneven platforms. More placement options help free up valuable space for active games or comfortable lounging. BenQ describes its approach as ‘true’ 4K, though, and crucially the independent Consumer Technology Association (CTA) in the US agrees. The BenQ W1800 sets out its home cinema stall in a number of key ways. For starters, it claims to be a 4K projector, and can support both of the HDR10 and HLG HDR formats. There’s no Dolby Vision or HDR10+ ‘active’ HDR support, but projectors that support those premium HDR flavours are currently as rare as the proverbial hen’s teeth.
The projector also has a relatively short throw of 1.3:1 with the zoom control at full, giving you a 100in picture at a distance of only 2.5m. The only worrying spec is a maximum brightness of just 2,000 ANSI lumens. BenQ W1800 review: Price and competition The Filmmaker Mode plays so nicely with the W1800’s home cinema-tuned capabilities, in fact, that we don’t actually mind not having the option to switch to a different preset with HDR content.
