About this deal

In this review, I’m taking a look at one of the most innovative child safety products of the last few years: the mifold folding booster seat. Thanks to our partners at Carfoldio, I have the opportunity to get hands-on and in-depth with their upgraded version, the new mifold comfort. Second, find the red tabs on the bottom to adjust the width of the lap belt guides. They’re easy to adjust once you know what to look for. There are three different widths to choose from, market on the guides as I, II and III. Choose the same width on each side, and be sure it’s the option that’s closest to your child without touching. For reference, my almost 7 year old (around 45 pounds) used setting I and my 9.5 year old (around 65 pounds) used setting II. To use the Mifold, simply unfold it, squeeze the red tabs on the underside to extend the belt guides, and position the booster to rest securely in your car’s seat bight (where the horizontal and vertical parts of your car’s seat come together). Then pull the lap belt through the guides and then clip the positioning strap so the clip sits approximately 1 inch above your child’s shoulder. We love our Bubblebum ( full review here) and travel with it all the time for our older child. But we didn’t start using it until he was 6 years old, very mature and rarely slept in the car. Before you can get to installing the hifold booster seat in your car, there is some preliminary set up. The manufacturer advertises 243 unique combinations thanks to the wide variety of adjustments, so it’s helpful to do a preliminary try with your kid before you’re in a high-pressure travel situation.

What my son thinks: At first he found this a little wobbly which makes sense considering it’s inflatable — though it’s quite sturdy. While it took him some getting used to, he now loves how much cushion it has and says “it’s comfortable!” Probably thanks in part to the memory foam air bladder. The mifold Original that is sold in the US is slightly different from the version sold in the rest of the world and is only regulated for use in the US. Neither mifold Original or mifold Basic are regulated for global use so for these two products we cannot advise you to use a mifold seat in a country where it is not regulated as local law enforcement may not recognize your version of the mifold seat. Where is mifold available? The mifold Grab-and-Go booster seat not only meets but in certain criteria also exceeds the current regulatory standards. There are also other products available on the market that exceed the standards, in different ways to mifold. We have used them with our own children over the years. We therefore always encourage caregivers to use the most protective car seat available that is suitable to the child, the circumstances and the vehicle being used. There are just a few steps to prepare the mifold portable booster seat for use, but it’s important to follow them. When you’re shopping for a portable booster seat, it’s important to remember that booster seats are not FAA-approved. That means you can’t use a booster seat on an airplane. From a safety perspective, that’s fine: your child will be over 40lbs, so the airplane seatbelt will secure her properly. But what should you do with her booster seat so it’s not lost or damaged? The mifold booster car seat conforms to the most universally accepted global booster car seat regulations currently in force: European Union ECE R44.4; FMVSS 213 in the United States, and the RSSR regulations in Canada.

We own the Chicco GoFit and love it! (Actually, if I’m being honest we now own four Chicco GoFits and three of them are permanently in my van.)The Mifold Original is the one that first gained the brand its fame and is the model we tried. It has a simple design that allows it to fold up to be 9-inches long and 4-inches wide, making it smaller and lighter than a typical kids’ tablet—to give you a baseline item to compare its size to. Before bringing mifold on a trip, I recommend trying your child on it in multiple cars to confirm that you get a good lap belt fit in different types of vehicles. mifold has revised its recommendations based upon an analysis of vehicle seat belt system testing results. The current Ford Motor Company Inflatable seat belt system (available in Ford and Lincoln vehicles) is approved for use with US, Canadian and EU versions of the mifold Grab-and-Go booster seats with the following model numbers: The US doesn’t have side impact testing standards yet, and the version of EU certification that the hifold has doesn’t require side impact testing either. That said, hifold does have impact-absorbing layers in the head and side wings.
