About this deal

If you have ever been even mildly curious about Glorantha or Runequest, here is your chance to explore. You will know exactly after exploring the Starter Set if this is the game for you."— Andrew Logan Montgomery. In A Rough Landing, fresh from the Battle of Dangerford, the adventurers run afoul of aggressive dark trolls, and must resolve a problem in a nearby farming community. The absolute perfect starter set that comes in a box... there are several wonderful starter sets out there but this is going to set a new high as to what it provides."

I’m obviously not going to say much about the last booklet in the box, since it contains the adventures and I’m trying to keep this review spoiler-free. What I can say is that it contains three adventures, and a few adventure seeds and rumours for further gaming. It holds up as a good introduction to the time of Cyberpunk Red with a lot of reference materials and adventures for use with the full book. (Not to mention, you could buy the official Q Workshop Cyberpunk Red dice on their own or buy the kit and get all the other stuff with it.) Three Maps – RuneQuest has always been known for its maps, and the new edition especially. Rather than overwhelming players with a massive map showing the entirety of Glorantha, we chose to focus on the area spotlighted in the Starter Set. So inside are three full-color folded maps. They include the Jonstown/Sartar region, the city of Jonstown, and the Rainbow Mounds themselves, a two-sided map labeled on one side and unlabeled on the other. This is just a superficial review, and mainly on the typography, graphical and general look of the material as I haven't had the time to completely read it through and play it yet. First of all: I am as Swede, so sorry for any typos or other grammatical or language error in this text. Thank you Chaosium that you continue to develop this wonderful game!Come and get your skittermander Starfinder's boxed set includes the RPG's basic rules, as well as things like maps, pawns and other accessories to get you started. Image: Paizo What if D&D took its cues from mythologies rather than pulp fantasy?" asks Dicebreaker. "That’s the question at the heart of RuneQuest, the critically-acclaimed RPG from game design legend Greg Stafford. RuneQuest offers a chance to play mythic heroes seeking adventure in a deep setting like few other RPGs." This is truly an amazing product. On so many levels. I think, most importantly, it showcases Chaosium's approach to their business and consumers. Game companies aren't forced to do Starter Sets like this. And they usually don't. Chaosium makes products for fans."— RPG Imaginings(unboxing). The first book throws you into the complex and crunchy rules of RuneQuest. I’m not totally convinced that this is the best way to make a good impression on new players, but Chaosium put some effort in simplifying the rules and making them easily understandable. In this scenario, you take on the role of Vasana, Daughter of Farnan (one of the pre-generated adventurers)*. She’s a formidable hero, capable warrior, trusted leader, and dedicated initiate of the Orlanth Adventurous cult. Vasana has allied herself with Kallyr Starbrow, leader of the Sartarite rebellion against the Lunar Empire. Kallyr is about to lead her troops against the Lunar Empire’s war leader, Fazzur Wideread, at Dangerford. Dangerford is a critical crossing on the strategically important river known as “The Creek.” With sides evenly matched, even a single stone could tip the scales one way or the other. Depending on how Vasana carries herself, she alone could sway the battle and change the fate of Dragon Pass.

The RuneQuest Starter Set’s main material is split between four books. The first book is the rulebook, the second describes the world of Glorantha in general and the area around Jonstown in particular, then there’s a “SoloQuest” book, and a book of adventures. Book 3: SoloQuest: A solo adventure to teach the rules to beginning gamemasters and players, titled Battle at Dangerford. If you’ve been curious about RuneQuest, Glorantha, or the fabulous Dragon Pass (which I discussed just recently), The Battle of Dangerford is a great introduction. Leap into the action here. The world of Glorantha is quite large and more thoroughly explored in the RuneQuest – Roleplaying in Glorantha core book and The Gloranthan Sourcebook. However, the Starter Set solely focuses on the Dragon Pass region. The Dragon Pass is one of the most militarily significant regions in all of Genertela. It is a mountainous region centered on the 12-kilometer-high mountain of Kero Fin, the highest peak in Glorantha and the birthplace of the major god Orlanth. Six countries or regions comprise the Dragon Pass: Sartar, Esrolia, Grazelands, Prax, Lunar Tarsh, and Old Tarsh. Dragon Pass is also home to trolls, dragonewts, dwarves, and other species. An exceptionally brief history of the broader world and Dragon Pass helps to put the people, places, and gods into context.I have purposely presented my overview of the rules as “high-level.” I hope you have taken away what you’re getting in the book, that being the brevity and clarity in which it is written and the lowering of the learning curve, which will make transitioning to the core rules so much smoother and more manageable. If you’d like a deeper look at the RuneQuest – Roleplaying in Glorantha, please have a look at Dan’s review – RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha Review. Magic, Myth, and Might in a Box! The RuneQuest Starter Setcontains everything you need to play the world’s best roleplaying game of gods, cults, magic, family, and fantasy! Great simplified rules, great intro to Glorantha, great solo gamebook, great adventures, great maps, great pregens... In some occurrences, rules have been modified to be simpler. The most obvious example is that the core rulebook’s fumble table, which is rolled on with a D100, has a simpler D20-based version in the starter set. This is fine, and quite welcome for a starter set product.
