Improve safety along the de-trunked sections of the existing A66. For example, the potentially confusing proposed junction layout on Barnard Castle Road has been replaced with a roundabout. There is still a long way to go, with Phase 1 scheduled to see us working into 2025, and Phase 2 for a further three years after that, but this is a huge milestone. Once this inspection is complete, we can then work with our design teams to develop the plan to repair the bridge, with the least disruption possible to customers and residents. We apologise for any inconvenience this change to our plans may have caused. James Dawes, Project Manager, said: “This is one of the biggest ever investments in customers’ water supplies here in the North East. Following years of planning and preparation, to ensure we can deliver this project in the best way possible, it’s fantastic to see the first pipes in the ground. National Highways say the closures are to allow for essential works to renew the safety barriers and street lighting along the stretch of road as they are "nearing the end of their serviceable life". While weekend resurfacing is taking place on the eastbound carriageway, the road will be placed into contraflow on the westbound carriageway. This means that the eastbound and westbound carriageways will be reduced to a single lane. Traffic from the eastbound carriageway will then be diverted onto the westbound carriageway. The westbound carriageway will have 1 lane running in each direction.
