About this deal

The X11 has a heavier specialized head with flared cheeks that help fling the wood apart when splitting. The 17″ handle allows it to be used one-handed or two, so you can put some real power behind it for larger pieces of wood. The hook at the bottom is smaller than the other models so you can hold that in a half-hand manner and get a little more clearance. But the hollow end of the handle can dig into your palm and isn’t super comfortable for extended use this way. It’s not the most comfortable to “half-hold” for extended use without gloves – the edge of the hollow handle will dig into your palm. But it’s fine, and comfortable when held normally. And in emergencies… who cares. The longer and heavier the axe, the more momentum it can build and the more potential power it can deliver. But the larger axes are less portable, and harder to manipulate for detailed tasks.

Fiskars axes are a great choice, but it can be hard to know which to get because they have so many models. And they don’t do a great job helping people tell them apart. The unique blade geometry will cut deep into green or dry wood before splitting clean through with one swing and uses the extra weight to gain momentum. The sturdy shaft and 3D grip help you get a really good handhold, and the balance is machine perfect.Similar to the X11 it’s a little too big and awkward for a dedicated kindling hatchet. You will often find yourself holding mid-handle and the larger blade feels like overkill for smaller pieces. Because of the heavy head, and long handle it’s actually a little clumsy to use one-handed for the smallest pieces of kindling or tinder. I hold it mid-handle for these small jobs, or more often switch to something like a knife for the tinder.

The new model is said to have been perfected for accurate balance and high swing speed thanks to the lightweight handle and 71 cm length. If I could take one axe on this list for a longer camping trip, it would probably be this one, and if I don’t have a long distance to hike, then I would also take this X-Series model. There are 8 different shapes and sizes in the Fiskars X-Series Axes range, which includes 3 x chopping axes and 5 x splitting axes, as seen in the image above. Each of the different Fiskars axes will do one job better than the next, which is why you should have a good idea of what you will be using it for before you buy one.

Despite the short handle, the wedge-shaped head makes it almost as good at chopping or splitting as the X7. Although you do lose a bit of power, and the leverage a longer handle can provide when splitting. Sometimes it helps to twist wood apart if it doesn’t split on the first strike, and you can’t do that as easily with the X5. The Fiskars X21 axe is ideal for splitting logs of up to 30 cm and above and is a great all-rounder that can handle most heavy-duty chopping tasks. The head is the same width as the X17 above, which means this axe can be used for more detailed woodwork and smaller chopping tasks.
