About this deal

These innovative grills deliver exceptional performance, convenience, and versatility for all your outdoor cooking adventures. The side tray looks like it is riveted on. That is a little concerning – as, if you pulled very hard, it might break off. I would honestly recommend people go for the 800 model out of the three. It has the best balance of features, size, fuel economy, and an included flat top griddle for added versatility. This review is a hands-on look at the Masterbuilt Gravity Series from unboxing to assembly and first use, and my assessment of who it’s best for and if it’s worth owning.

You can control both temperature and cook time from Wifi and bluetooth, which means that you can control everything you need on the grill even when you’re down the street partying it up with the neighbors or at a soccer game hours before dinner. If you already cook with charcoal and would like to ramp up the smoking side of your barbecue game, this unit probably makes more sense for you than a pellet grill since you’ve got the charcoal handy. Since this barbecue uses indirect heat as opposed to a normal kettle grill that has the coals directly beneath the grill grate, I wasn’t sure how well it would reverse sear a steak. Starting at around 120˚C, I slapped on a farm shop sirloin and left it on for around 30 minutes then let it rest while I raised the Masterbuilt’s temperature to 350˚C – it didn't take long. As soon as the meat hit the grate, it sizzled like a sizzling thing. Fat juicesthen started dripping on to the scorchingly hot manifold below which in turn produced a flame, and it’s this combination of high heat with an occasional flame that makes searing such a cinch on this grill. Needless to say, the surface of the steak sported great sear marks and superb caramelisation while the centre remained a succulent medium rare. The Masterbuilt Portable Charcoal Grill provides the unmatched flavour of charcoal with the ease of a gas grill on the go. I’ve heard that a lot of people found the Gravity Series 560 a pain to assemble and some have said it’s not the best built barbecue in terms of materials used. I beg to differ and I’ve assembled more barbecues than I’ve had hot dinners, though I will agree that one specific step in the assembly did make my head explode. A one-year warranty accompanies your Masterbuilt Gravity Series 1050, but it does not cover the paint or rust. It’s a shorter warranty than I’d like to see from a reputable builder, but I wouldn’t exclude it from your consideration because of it.

Yes, you can grill on the Masterbuilt gravity-fed series. But, you can grill just as easily on a much smaller, much simpler, more fuel-efficient, and much less expensive charcoal barbecue. BUT, it’s good to have a dual-purpose bit of kit that can primarily smoke, and grill on occasion when needed.Baking and roasting isn’t out of the question either, and with the cooking temperature being controlled by a digital control panel, the sky’s the limit.
