Priestley’s socialist uprising of a play dramatises the dangers of casual capitalism’s cruelty, complacency and hypocrisy. Over its 105 unbroken minutes, Daldry’s German expressionist interpretation builds a political layer, one whose resonance renews with each era. Since 1992, Daldry’s production of An Inspector Calls has won a total of 19 major awards, including four Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards, and has played to more than 4 million theatergoers worldwide. An Inspector Calls is the most internationally-lauded production in the National Theatre’s history.

While the morality of the play is not particularly nuanced—Arthur Birling, for example, is the archetype of the money-grasping industrialist, while his cold wife (Christine Kavanagh) embodies snobbery and moral disapproval—there is something undeniably satisfying about watching these appalling people being confronted with their misdeeds. Although the play takes place over a single evening, so real time, Inspector Goole seems to exist outside real time. He appears uninvited at the wealthy Birlings’ houseOne night in April 1912, the comfortably upper-middle-class Birling family gather to celebrate the engagement of their daughter, Shelia. In attendance areher fiance Gerald, her younger brother Eric, and her parents,Sybil and the boorish, dominating Arthur. The party is soon interrupted by the appearance of the mysterious Inspector Goole, who has come to enquire upon the recent suicide of Miss Eva Smith, a young working-class woman known to the family. The production is well performed by a strong ensemble, but I was particularly impressed by the more seasoned performers. Liam Brennan gives an arresting (no pun intended) performance as the inspector, while Jeff Harmer and Christine Kavanagh are both excellent as the elder Birlings. They have never heard of him but the Inspector’s ‘massiveness, solidity and purposefulness’ take over. He describes the way in which each of the Birlings and Gerald are involved in Eva Smith’s suicide. In February 2015, filming began in Saltaire, West Yorkshire. [6] Although the exterior shots of the mill were filmed at Saltaire, the interior shots of the mill were filmed at Queen Street Mill on the outskirts of Burnley, Lancashire. A full-sized office was built in the middle of the Weaving Shed for this production and was dismantled once filming was completed.

Priestley was interested in the idea of time, and wrote several plays, such as ‘Dangerous Corner’ (1932), that included the theme of time. In ‘An Inspector Calls’ he explores the idea that time could repeat itself so that events happen again.
