Although expertly using the sponge float will give you a semi-smooth finish, the walls will probably still be a bit rough to the touch. If you want to paint your exterior walls, sanding them down is the best option to achieve that pristinely smooth look. Screed: A screed is a straight edge tool, often made of metal or aluminum, used to level the render and create a flat surface. It helps ensure that the render is applied evenly across the wall. Pebbledash will give you all the same hard-wearing properties as wet dash render. It is essentially the same, except that with pebble dash the stones are applied afterwards. But if you want to be able to update how the exterior of your home looks by changing the colour, or if you want a more uniform colour look, then wet dash is the better option. If your walls are curved or uneven Once it is hard enough to push a rendering float onto the surface without render bulging out around the float, you can begin to float the surface up.

my plasterer said he was busy on a job, so I left it untill the spread could come and scratch it.A week after we applied it and it had dried, it started to rain, and the renderers stabelizing primer went from dark grey to a light grey.I thought it a bit strange, so I went up and rubbed my hand over it and noticed that the primer had gone soft and rubber like and could be scratched off with my finger nail. If it is allowed to freeze it will expand and on thawing it will leave a void which will again fill with water when it rains. This will also freeze and so the process goes on. See our project on Freeze-Thaw action for more information. As above, add sand to the mixer, mix for a few minutes then add cement, mix for a few minutes and then start adding water slowly until you get to the correct consistency of self supporting and not too wet. Scaffolding or Ladders: Depending on the height of the wall, you may need scaffolding or ladders to reach higher areas safely. The final stage in the rendering process is sponge the surface over. Many renderers will use an ordinary large car sponge which is very slightly damp, to give a final pass to the wall.

Once the battens have been removed and any other voids or imperfections are filled to be level with the rest of the wall, the wall should be left for another hour or so to start the drying out process. Choosing the perfect texture and colour

Applying the Render The render is applied onto the wall using a trowel or a rendering machine. Application should start from the wall’s bottom and progress upwards. After the initial layer, it is advisable to let it set for a few hours before applying a second coat. Grain size can also affect how easily the render can be applied. Based on our technical experience, we have listed our grain sizes with all the pros and cons associated and hopefully, this will elucidate the situation further! 1mm Render Grain Size Apply Paint Use exterior-grade paint suitable for sand and cement render. Apply a thin, even coat in sections, starting from the top and working downwards. This cookie, set by YouTube, registers a unique ID to store data on what videos from YouTube the user has seen.

this new renderers stabelizing primer is a very new product and I don't think it will last long.Any product that breaks down with water in any way shape or form can't be any good for external rendering IMO. As you drag the straight edge up the wall and pull off any high spots it is inevitable that you will leave some holes as the render clings together and some is pulled off by the straight edge. Poor Adhesion Improper surface preparation or mixing can lead to inadequate adhesion, resulting in peeling or flaking. But first, let’s understand what silicone render is. Simply put, it’s a type of decorative finish that’s applied to the external walls of a building. It’s made up of silicone, resins, and mineral fillers. This composition gives it a unique set of properties, making it a popular choice in the construction industry. K render is a modern option comprising Portland cement, sand, and a polymer-based admixture. It is known for its strength, durability, and versatility, suitable for various surfaces and providing weatherproofing. Allow the render to dry and cure properly before applying any additional coats or paint to the silicone. Apply even pressure firmly on the sander, but do not press too hard to avoid damaging the motor and scratching the wall. So, you want to K rend your home, but you already have old painted render that would be costly to remove. So, what are your options, and can you just render over the top?

is our most popular grain size and is the choice of most installers. This is because it’s easy to install, it goes far in terms of coverage so it’s very cost-effective, and because it’s more textured due to its slightly larger grain size, it also hides imperfections in the basecoat. Homeowners like this grain size because it doesn’t have a painted finish but it’s not overly textured – you can only really see it when you look closely! 2mm Render Grain SizeWet dash render is not the same as pebbledash. With pebbledash, the cement render is applied first and then small pebbles are thrown onto the wall. Whereas with wet dash render, the small pieces of gravel are mixed in with the sand and cement mix and it is all applied together. This gives a very different finish. With pebbledash, the final finish is the exposed stones themselves, but with wet dash render, the stones aren't visible. What this means is that the wet dash render can be painted and updated whenever you want (pebble dash can't be painted). Rendering the walls of your home or other building makes it more durable, but often patching up the render results in a rough surface. Before you decide to apply a fresh coat of paint, it’s better to start with a smooth surface. Rendering is very similar to plastering and is a job that requires some skill and plenty of practice. Despite this it’s certainly something that you can learn to do. Read on to find out how to render walls and everything else you’ll need to know. A Note on Mixing Render
