About this deal

At the moment PlanetCare is safely storing the used filtered materials. Once they have sufficient quantity, they will reuse/recycle it all. At the moment they are planning to reuse the materials by converting them into insulation mats. But, they're always on the lookout for viable solutions and will choose the best available option to reuse/ recycle the fibres. Doing the laundry can have a huge environmental impact, whether that be using tonnes of energy running the washing machine and tumble drier - or the pollutants that are released from the products you use. Using a microfiber filter is just one way of reducing that impact. Why not make a few more changes - we've tonnes of handy tips in our blog. Over the years, alongside our wonderful Chimney Sheep®, we have worked to curate our own range of household and garden items that are both practical and effective. Where possible our products are made from recycled, sustainable or natural materials. Our shop has everything from draught excluders to insulation, laundry products to natural gardening items and we always have our thinking caps on as to what we can add next. Even with the chimney capped a lot of warm air will rise into the chimney where it’s not needed. We don’t want to sell you something you don’t need, but the Chimney Sheep® has been trialed in capped chimneys with favourable results as it reduces the whistling wind noise that sometimes occurs through the chimney cap vents. It also stops dirt and mortar from spilling into the room from older chimneys.

By cutting out draughts, you can keep your home nice and cosy. You will also use less heating, which is a win win: reducing your bills and helping the planet. The climate is changing due to emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity, and heating buildings currently accounts for more than a third of the UK’s emissions. The wool rope is more sympathetic to the environment,” says Kate. “When they use plastic rope, they have to return and cut it out several years later, and there is always the question of how much is actually collected.” Although fitting a chimney cap will help when it comes to preventing draughts and heat loss, using an additional draught excluder is still often a good idea. The felt head of a Chimney Sheep® usually lasts about 10 years and is 100% wool which means it is completely biodegradable and compostable. The handles are made with recyclable plastic therefore are extremely durable and designed to last for decades. We have designed them so that when the felt head does wear out, you can just replace it with a new felt head and keep the same handle to reduce waste and the use of excess plastic. When the time comes and you have to say goodbye to your felt head, get in touch with us. A Chimney Balloon is a good option for some circumstances. In fact, The Chimney Balloon Co is actually our sister company, so we like them a lot! They are great if you have a fireplace you don’t use because once in place they are a bit fiddly to take in and out. The Chimney Sheep® is easy to put in and take out as many times as you like so better suited to a fireplace that is being used regularly. We would also recommend a Chimney Balloon if you have a traditional Victorian fireplace surround with a damper flap as they are much easier to get into the chimney flue than a Chimney Sheep® would be. If you do go for an inflatable Chimney Balloon we would always say to avoid going for a universal sized balloon because they will not fit all sized chimneys and therefore won’t be as effective! We’d also suggest going for one from The Chimney Balloon Co as it is the only inflatable chimney draught excluder on the market that isn’t made of PVC. If you were to accidentally light a fire with a PVC balloon in place, it would give off chlorine gas fumes which can be quite dangerous.

A draft stopper for your fireplace can make a noticeable difference to the temperature of a room or even your whole house. We’ve definitely noticed that our living room hasn’t been so cold since we started using a draft stopper within our open fireplace. The wool is naturally breathable and will allow some air to permeate through. If you have a problem with damp in a chimney it may be that the warm damp air is rising into the flue then condensing on the cold walls higher up. The Chimney Sheep® will prevent this warm air from rising so should cut off this source of damp. If you have a very damp home then you should look at whether it’s properly ventilated, but usually chimneys are a source of uncontrolled ventilation and consequently provide a bit too much of it.The microfiber filter is very easy to install. In fact, for most washing machines this process takes less than 10 minutes. The filters are compatible with all types of washing machines. Domestic – Homes with chimney systems often use coal, wood or oil as fuel sources. These systems require effective insulation to protect occupants.

We’re delighted to add a range of excellent sheep wool insulation products to our range. Wool is a remarkable natural material with a range of properties depending on how you process it and where you apply it. Having wool around the home makes it a healthier and more enjoyable environment. If you have a top-sealing damper there should be a chain with a handle located to the side of the firebox. Pulling this lever will open and close the damper. The only downside that we’ve found when using our Chimney Sheep draft excluder is that the ends of it can become frayed, but this doesn’t seem to affect the performance of it once it’s up the chimney. The filter must be placed outside the washing machine on the drain hose. It should not be raised above the height of the drain hose exiting the washing machine. The hose length should be held to a minimum. Raising the filter and a long drain hose will both reduce the efficiency of pumping and filtering and should be avoided. SilentWool Joist is also a very useful product in the armoury of wool sound insulation. It is 10cm wide, 10m long, same stuff as the SilentWool Floor (minus the paper) that is rolled out along a joist and stapled to it before the next layer of timber is laid across it. This significantly reduces sound reverberation through buildings.

As this warm air rises, it needs to be replaced. So cold air is pulled in, usually from around doors and windows, creating the chilly draught that you can feel (and hear when it’s windy). Chimney Sheep® has been featured in the press quite a bit too, from the likes of The Guardian, The Times, Good Housekeeping and Ideal Home. The Chimney Balloon is made from plastic, and is designed to be inflated, using a pump or by blowing into a pipe, to fill the chimney and prevent cold air from coming in and warm air from travelling up and out.
