About this deal

There is often only a brief period when clay soils are workable between waterlogged soils after winter and baked hard clay from late spring I’ve had drainage & sumps put in and had new lawn laid inbetween but due to amount of rain we’ve had (I’m in East Lancashire) I have waterlogged ground, clay underneath. It should be noted that we’re not talking about a cheap product here either, with this 1 kg bag costing around 1/3 of some 10 kg bags, but it’s still worth considering if you have the available budget simply due to the finish that can be achieved. If the area is predominantly clay then I would recommend the IMPRESS: Clay Master. It is a specially blended grass seed mixture designed for clay and heavy clay soil conditions. The tall fescue component has a strong deep rooting system which not only allows it to penetrate your clay soils effectively but ensures a drought tolerant lawn, especially in soils that are prone to dryness. Note: it’s usually better to use organic based products on clay because the nutrients in non-organic products won’t release from the soil because of the soil’s high levels of density.

If you want to find out more about the different aerating tools tried and tested – have a read of my other article ‘How to aerate your lawn’ The answer is that there is no ‘best quality’ grass seed. A grass seed is a grass seed. It’ll germinate and grow like any other, given the right conditions. If you have a large lawn, there won’t be much point in you buying a 400 g bag of grass seed that will only cover 9 – 16 m². These smaller containers are best suited to smaller lawns, offering excellent quality to small areas but not being cost effective in larger ones. This type of grass is also very winter hardy, and will keep its lush green colour, but just be careful not to cut it too short, as it doesn’t seem to be too keen on that. Light shade doesn’t seem to be a problem for most perennial ryegrass cultivars, but they definitely thrive better in the sun. Browntop bentgrass Before you know it, the Spring has turned into Summer and the weather is now warming up. It’s now time to apply our ‘ droughtsafe’ clay soil fertiliser. Laying turf is a good choice if speed matters more to you than cost; quality turf can cost 10 times as much as the equivalent amount of seed. Turf works well if you’re on a slope, and if you want a lawn that’s very tough and durable.

If you have a large lawn, then it’s a good idea to hire an aerator. If you want to manage your lawn yourself in the future, then it could even be worth investing in an electric aerating machine. With this in mind, it makes sense to lay down grass seed that will eventually grow into something that can handle this kind of punishment. Mixes that consist of perennial ryegrass and red fescue are the thing to go for here, and if you can find one that has a touch of smooth stalked meadow grass seed in there, it’ll really help with repairing patches in the future. This is grass seed that really does what is claimed, although you have to be patient at first. It was over two weeks before we started to see some green shoots popping through the soil. Within a couple of weeks or so after that, the grass looked stunning. The best way for me to talk you through the process of improving your clay soil bed for a lawn is by giving you the different things to do during the year. Birds eating grass seed before it has a chance to germinate can be a very irritating waste of money, so it’s nice to see that Gro-Sure have factored in a solution to this problem with their Multi-Purpose Grass Lawn Seed. There are literally dozens of different grass seed cultivars out there, each with their own properties that make them great for some gardens, and not so great for others. Explaining the differences between them all would take forever, but to make things simpler, we can break things down into the most commonly used grass species for lawns in the UK. You’ll find that most bags of grass seed that you buy will be a combination of these types of seeds: Smooth stalked meadow grass Aerating is the perfect way for decompaction of the soil. Clay is renowned for being very compact so going over with the aerator can do wonders for the lawn,

Once there is an even coverage throughout the lawn and grass blades are hitting heights of 5-7cm, your lawn is ready for its first mow on the highest setting For the dedicated who only a formal, bowling green lawn will do, Rolawn’s Minster Pro is the business! Best for shaded gardens: Gardeners Dream Shady seed Got tall trees casting shadows? Gardeners Dream shady seed should be the stuff you go for. Fine Fescue is a collective term that includes several species such as Chewings fescue, creeping red fescue, and hard fescue. Fine Fescue is known for its ability to grow well in poor soils, including clay. It has a fine texture, shade tolerance, and requires less water and maintenance compared to Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass. Growing and maintaining a healthy lawn on heavy clay soil can be a ball ache. There’s no other way to put it.

For gardens that are not completely shaded, hardy seeds like perennial ryegrass and some fescue cultivars will be just fine. With these seeds, you will probably have to overseed once per year if the area is particularly shaded, but other than that, they are good choices. Which seeds are better suited to UK garden soil? As of this writing you can easily get hold of a simple PH soil measure from a local garden centre and most of them are dead easy to use. APRIL
