Oblivion is simple, complex, rich, cold, intriguing, bleak, and hopeful. The relatively short novel not only contains its own plot, but an entire play, a drama critic's article, several letters, and a chunk of a secondary character's diary, making its structure a bit of a challenge. The transition to the play is jarring, and I had difficulty understanding that the play had started and that the thoughts being expressed were words said by the actors and not in the narrator's head. That may have been Hart's intent, in that the book moves rapidly and frequently between Andrew's (the narrator's) thoughts and dialogue with other characters, evoking the foggy experience of grief that blurs the line between outer and inner worlds -- being half there in each world, and yet not there at all, not sure if one is thinking or talking, hearing voices inside or outside. This could be brilliant, but I can't decide because it's not a pleasant place to be. Most of the book isn't a pleasant place to be. After Martyn dies, Ingrid tells Stephen that he only lived for Anna (actually, Stephen was passionately in love with her), while she only lived for Martyn, her son. If she was attracted to her son, this might explain why she disliked his girlfriend.

Some readers may be put off by Damage as the storyline revolves around Dr. Stephen Fleming's passionate and TABOO love affair with a damaged younger woman. I normally don't read stories that deal with adultery, as they tend to piss me off. Josephine Hart poetic writing depicts a love affair that was so brilliantly flawed, I was completely spellbound. From the very first word it is clear that the narrator is speeding his way towards disaster and the reader has no choice but to watch him destroy not only his own life but also that of those around him. On the surface, Damage is about a middle-aged man who has an affair with a younger woman. Pretty standard dramatic fare, right? But wait--there's more. The younger woman in question happens to be his son's fiancée, and the man in question happens to be a member of Parliament. There was a full moon in the starless sky. From the moment they are born, our helplessness increases. Instead of being ours to mould and shape after our best knowledge and endeavour, they are themselves. From their birth they are the centre of our lives, and the dangerous edge of existence.”They involve a degree of mild violence and of domination (there are references to slavedom, to being tied, and blindfolded, of Anna giving herself over to his will, of being physically ‘arranged’). These scenes leave us with a sense of the brutality of Fleming’s sexual desire, and of Anna’s desire to submit to it.
