Epic Bike Rides of the World | Lonely Planet

Armchair, beginner and hardcore cyclists will thrill to the pictures and diverse biking routes outlined in this substantial hardcover book."— Newsday You’re heading for the sea: to watch whales from Hermanus and to follow the coast to the Cape of Good Hope, dropping by to visit the famous Boulders penguin colony and following a part of the annual Cape Argus race route. You'll pass through both the Lake District and Peak District National Parks, so you can expect some pretty serious climbs, but the views from the top of each mountain pass will more than make up for the leg-burn taken to get up there. Is there a better country to cycle through than New Zealand? This is a land known for its natural beauty, welcoming people and delicious wine, and this cycling trip through New Zealand’s beautiful South Island takes in the best of it.This is a great picture book. The routes descriped range from ultra epic to very approachable. The problem is, there is almost no organization to the rides. There will be a ride in Africa, then 3 more "like that ride" all over the world. There is no way to find what you are looking for outside of random browsing. And even then, the routes are not described in detail, so as to help you plan such a ride. Rather, you are given grand overviews. This is great to get you sparked, but not to get you closer to getting your wheels on the path. The organizers of the Barry-Roubaix call it the largest gravel race in the world, and with 3,500 contestants, who are we to doubt them? There’s tons of prize money and whatnot, but really, the Barry is more of a celebration of cycling and a spring throwdown than it is a race. The huge peloton is filled with people excited to cast off the winter blanket and embrace a new riding season, and we love everything about it, especially the fact that the 100-mile route is called Psycho Killer. Want to ride it another weekend? The race organizers put together a comprehensive course map that you can tweak to choose your own adventure.

Ride from the snow-covered peaks of the High Atlas to the epic sand dunes of the Sahara on this classic adventure cycling holiday in Morocco's arid Jebel Sahro region with KE Adventure Travel.Longtime Tour de France fans have heard about the great climbers of Basque Country for generations, but relatively few Americans ride there. Which is weird, because the western Pyrenees rival France with its mix of mountains, beaches, hamlets, and dining. Stage out of San Sebastian and ride the Alto de Arrate from both directions. The two-mile climb appears frequently in the Vuelta a España and annually in the Tour of the Basque Country. Think lush countryside and 10 percent grades—without the touristy T-shirt shops of France.
