About this deal

Make your theatre trip extra special and dine in Prelude, a fresh and contemporary space inspired by the building’s art deco heritage. Better still, head to the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, this week to see how international bestselling author Peter James does it. The play is very cleverly and wittily performed by the experienced and talented cast members, also joined by Anna Mitcham who plays the playwrights’ glamorous secretary, Jill Prentice and Detective Inspector Berry, who is a huge thriller fan played by Jeremy Lloyd Thomas. David Callister and Susan Earnshaw are well cast as Nigel Forbes and Maxine Goodman, one a bumptious extrovert who thinks it is time to end their writing partnership, the other an irrational bundle of energy who is easily led. The play stars Shane Ritchie and Jessie Wallace, two fine actors who have a wonderful, if not troublesome, rapport on stage as an unhappily married couple, Victor and Joan Smiley.

Murder in the Dark at York Theatre Royal Live Review: Murder in the Dark at York Theatre Royal

The 2021 season gets off to a sparky start with All About Murder by Brian Clemens, noted for penning television series The Avengers and The Professionals, and his writing partner Dennis Spooner whose credits include The Champions. York Theatre Royal begins their new season with Murder in the Dark by Torben Betts. I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing like a thriller to generate a little bit of excitement and there is nothing quite like a murder mystery on an Autumn evening, so I settled down to be entertained. But this production wasn’t quitewhat Iexpected… Rebecca Charles ’s recent theatre credits include The Dresser (Theatre Royal Bath), An Ideal Husband (Vaudeville Theatre), The Graduate (West Yorkshire Playhouse), The Father (Duke of York’s/Wyndham’s/Tricycle/Theatre Royal Bath), Les Liaisons Dangereuses, (Salisbury Playhouse), The Old Country (English Touring Theatre/Trafalgar Studios), Julius Caesar , (Barbican and Tour) and Great Expectations (Manchester Royal Exchange). Henry Goodman was simply superb at Hercule Poirot, giving the best performance that I’d seen at the Theatre Royal Bath in many a year. This wonderful actor perfectly inhabited every mannerism and idiosyncrasy of the OCD detective with such subtle skill that it was a real joy to watch. From the pedantic way that the moves and simply takes a seat, to his perfectly pitched questioning of the suspects and wonder at his own skills, he is joy to watch, making this one of the most complete and entertaining portrayals of the great detective that you’ll ever see (sorry Ken, but you really should be taking notes…). Joanna Van Kampen as Greta Ohlsson, Joanna McCallum as Princess Dragomiroff. Photo: Johann Persson AGATHA CHRISTIE’S THE MOUSETRAP is the world’s longest-running play. This thrilling West End production is THE genre-defining murder mystery from the best-selling novelist of all time… case closed! Director Philip Franks said, “Horror films have been my guilty pleasure since I was a morbid child. Now is the time to find out whether many years’ worth of jump scares and terrible nightmares can be put to good use. We’ll also see whether my more adult theory – that horror often puts its finger on what worries us most as a society at any given time – will also hold true.“I am sorry that, to me, this reads like an over elaborate creative writing exercise. Or maybe an attempt at parody. I do think some readers will enjoy it. But not for me, disappointingly. This thrilling new ghost story by acclaimed writer Torben Betts will thrust you into darkness and have you on the edge of your seats until the final chilling twist. These were the words of David Whetstone, The Journal Culture Editor, when he offered me the chance to review this play which is touring the country now. From November 2 to 6, York Opera will present The Magic Flute , Mozart’s magical and last great opera, sung in English with an orchestra. Samuel Collings’ television work includes The Lost Pirate Kingdom, Hex and Outlander. On stage, his credits include The Great Murder Mystery, and Othello and Macbeth at HOME Manchester and Lyric Hammersmith. He last performed at the Theatre Royal Bath in Waiting For God in 2017. Taz Munyaneza recently performed in Our Lady Of Kibeho at Theatre Royal Stratford East and the television series The One. Marc Antolin has appeared in The Magician’s Elephant for the RSC, Romantics Anonymous at Bristol Old Vic and Little Shop of Horrors, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Philip Cairns’ recent credits include Call The Midwife on BBC1 and, on stage, Cyrano de Bergerac in the West End, Peer Gynt at the National Theatre and Pressure which toured to Bath in 2018.
