About this deal

Images taken in daylight have excellent detail rendition and color accuracy, with no noise and great dynamic range throughout. The phone does a great job with foliage and inanimate objects, and it is on par with the best devices in this category. The wide-angle lens also does a great job in daylight scenarios, and thanks to autofocus, it doubles as a macro shooter. I prefer this system to dedicated macro modules, and the X90 Pro can dial in on subjects just 4cm away — I got a lot of detailed macro shots out of the device. Shutter lag is the time difference between when the shutter is triggered and when the photo is actually taken. The Vivo X90 Pro didn’t land alone in China – there was also a standard Vivo X90, which is set to hit other parts of Asia but currently nowhere else, and the Vivo X90 Pro Plus, which remains a China exclusive. It’s also pretty rapid when it comes to recharging with 120W dual-cell flash charging that I’ve found can provide 50% charge in just 11 minutes, with a full 100% charge in 28 minutes.

This model is not a professional waterproof mobile phone, and is tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529. The resistance to splash, water, and dust is not permanent and may be reduced due to daily wear and tear. Do not charge the mobile phone when it is wet. Refer to Safety information in Settings for cleaning and drying instructions. Damage due to liquid ingress are not covered by the warranty. That viewing experience is further boosted with support for HDR10+ with a peak brightness of 1300 nits that allows for impressive dynamic range, though it is missing support for Dolby Vision.

That’s all well and good but where the main camera truly excels is in low light. I was very impressed with the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s low-light performance a few weeks ago, and the Vivo X90 Pro somehow takes it even further. That’s with battery-hungry features including the high refresh rate, maximum resolution and always-on display all enabled, by the way. The Vivo’s chipset isn’t quite as good and the screen isn’t as high resolution as the S23 Ultra's, but those are about the only weak links on paper.

The X90 Pro is Vivo's most refined phone yet.

Vegan leather rear aside, the other big feature you’ll no doubt notice is the rear camera bump. Well, I say bump, it’s more like a hill, protruding farther from the rear of the smartphone than any other that I can recall in recent memory. Weird name aside, FunTouch OS has a bit of a bad reputation for being one of the worst skins available for Android smartphones – though I must say that the company has come a long way with the software in the past few years.

It’s not just a great camera phone either; it has a gorgeous 7.78-inch AMOLED display with a buttery-smooth dynamic 120Hz refresh rate that makes everything feel near instantaneous. Throw in a MediaTek 9200 chipset, all-day battery life and the ability to charge to 100% in less than half an hour and you’ve got a tempting flagship smartphone. While the phone misses out on gimbal stabilization this time, you get excellent stabilization while shooting handheld, and I didn't run into any issues whatsoever in this area. The best part is that Night mode works with video (at 4K30), and it delivers some of the best video footage you'll see out of any device in this category. The price puts it pretty directly against competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max, but that’s a big ask for a phone with less brand recognition, fewer repair and warranty options, and a less polished software experience. With a smaller sensor, it’s no match for the main camera in dimmer light, but colours and crispness are better than the ultrawide manages in other conditions, making it a happier substitute. And with a broader depth of field, it can cover for the main shooter when the bokeh isn’t quite right, lending a versatility to the whole setup.
