About this deal

Most mobile solar charging units have at least one USB port, making it easy to charge most devices and batteries people take into the wild. Still, many smaller solar chargers will struggle to provide enough power to charge multiple devices simultaneously. Yes, Watson, Watts matter (or why watts matter)

When it comes to accessories, there are two main accessories you can use with the solar panels, cords and batteries. In addition to that, the safe charging features prevent any overloading and keep your gadgets safe. It’s my personal go-to choice – I’m a keen photographer so I keep this stashed in my trunk to re-charge my camera batteries on the go. The EB55 has a maximum total output of 700W, bar the odd 1,400W surge, so we couldn’t test it with the heater we normally use to test big batteries like this. However, it ran a 42in LED TV, drawing 72W to 75W, for 5hrs 27mins, making it through the first two Hobbit movies in the process. If you want to run kettles or coffee machines then you’ll need something with a higher output ceiling. If not, this is a brilliant compact solar generator at a thoroughly reasonable price. Of course, to charge it up you’ll need at least one of Anker’s 531 solar panels. Anker sells the PowerHouse 767 in bundles with one or two, and you can use up to four simultaneously if you buy them separately. On a particularly sunny March day, we were able to get around 170W to 197W per panel, at least when the clouds were out of the way. This is enough to charge up the generator in around 13 hours with one panel or seven hours with two.If a solar charger has a smaller amount of amps for a larger device, it will charge the device at a slower rate. So more amps are generally more compatible and useful. Wattage (Watts) On the other hand, our Best for Camping winner, the 50 Watt Goal Zero Nomad 50 Solar Panel, along with the Sherpa 100 AC battery, could handle the needs of a family on a week-long trip or a group of mountaineers exploring a range out for an extended period. The Goal Zero system is significantly larger, heavier, and much more expensive. But this system with this power bank battery has an AC plug and is the only one we considered that charges devices such as large laptops. Power output is measured in terms of wattage or how many watts of energy a solar panel can output. The more efficient a solar panel is means it can output more watts and amps from a smaller area. For charging devices you’ll want a solar panel that’s capable of producing at least 5 watts, however many highly portable solar panels produce up to 28 watts of charging power in ideal conditions. Higher wattages do equal more charging power—however, since most of these solar panels still use USB-A style plugs, they can only produce 2.4 amps of current through those plugs. Portability and size To top it off, it comes with a built-in ammeter which allows you to measure the current output at any moment.

The Renogy 100W Foldable is an impressively sturdy panel with a beefy aluminum frame and legs. It's just as rigid and sturdy as a panel you'd install on your house — but has a single hinge for transport. Compared to the many thin, slightly bendable solar chargers we've tested, this one feels just about bombproof. Though it's tempting to mount this waterproof beast to the roof of our van, it also has seriously sturdy, fully adjustable angling legs that help it angle precisely into the sun no matter where it is in the sky (or behind the clouds). If that's not enough, this panel put up some of the best energy efficiency results across all the models we tested, rain or shine. We took the TopNotch top 10 solar chargers for a week-long road trip through Montana to find out which ones came out shining.

It’s lightweight, foldable AND waterproof so it even does a great job in the harshest outdoor conditions. The ECEEN version has a new take on how a solar charger should look. The book-style charger is one of the most durable with a zippered case protecting the solar panels. When referring to solar panels, wattage is the solar panel’s maximum solar power output in ideal conditions (like a sunny day with no cloud cover). More watts also mean more power. You’ll be surprised how many solar chargers don’t do this – imagine going to use your smartphone only to find its flat because your solar panel didn’t have an auto-restart function.
