While I find the R9 amazing and the best miniature painting desk lamp, it might not be for everyone. If you are looking for something even more affordable than our budget option way more mobile, the Uberlight Flex might be the one for you. Some architect lamps let you adjust the amount of light they put out. If you prefer different levels for different tasks, look for one with a dimmable feature. Some let you choose between three or four different light settings. Let us look a bit at what a good lamp for painting minis actually needs to do. 1. The colour of the white light needs to show the actual colours of the model (it should throw a white light in the Kelvin 5000 range with good CRI) It can be powered by a USB plug or power plug, but it is sadly not by battery (which would have made it amazing). You could take a power bank with it instead. Another important feature of architect lamps is their burning time. While all lamps are built to burn for hours, architect lamps were traditionally built with the understanding that they need to be able to comfortably burn for hours at a time. For that reason, you’ll find the materials are more durable than you might typically find with a lamp.

Something to add here is that desk lamps with adjustment on how much bright light it casts is also great. When painting miniatures late at night, you might want to tone it down a bit and tune the light so it is more yellow (blue light is not great for, you know, sleeping). 4. The durability of the desk lamp needs to be high and the heat production needs to be low I can already tell that the Neatfi light will last me years and years from its mostly metal construction. The LEDs are rated for up to 100,000 hours of use, and will never get hot. The 3-yr warranty is a nice touch but I doubt will be needed. The overall look of an architect lamp also sets it apart from others. While they all feature that long arm, they tend to be built more for function than looks. You usually won’t find them as decorative as other lamp types. Instead, they may be a simple, solid color.

Until now I had used more light points (the neon, the Ikea lamp, the lamp above the shelf). As useful as it may be to be able to adjust your lamp, if it continues to move around after you’ve positioned it, it will become a huge distraction. Your lamp should have the flexibility to be movable while also holding its position once you’ve put it in place. Although all architect lamps are more flexible than standard lamps, some feature more swivel than others. Look for one with a wide range on the head, as well as adjustability in the arm.
