Today, we have millions of users a month from around the world, and assess more than 1,000 products a year. The spec details listed a USB-C port, nowhere did it say that a external monitor would not work with it.

The rear chassis is made from metal and the left side houses just one multifunction button and a USB Type-C port.Usually the monitor will reset in a few seconds, but if it doesn’t, you can restart your computer and see if that helps. Once it is connected, I get a message "Display connection might be limited", the monitor turns on and provides a "No signal" message and then turns off. Case in point: When it came time to do the I1601FWUX's color and brightness testing, I was unable to get our testbed PC to recognize the panel when I connected a cable between them. This is particularly noticeable when watching videos where there’s plenty of dark areas or high levels of contrast – live music videos being a good example.

There were real problems with posterization; color gradients separated into distinct blobs of color on-screen. Blacks were crushed, making it difficult to distinguish between dark shades, and subtle details were often lost because of it. Many new laptops that have USB-C ports should support DisplayPort over USB on at least one of them, but the same may not be true of models more than a year old. The slim display comes with a folding magnetic cover that does double duty as a display cover for storage and a stand for portable use.The lightweight AOC I1601FWUX USB-C Portable Monitor is for USB-C laptops that support DisplayPort over USB. Also as a disclaimer, I did try to get this working on two different Windows 10 units and it did not seem to take. You may need to try to connect your PC to a different monitor or your monitor to a different PC to see if the issues continue or if it is the combination of the two.

The refresh rate is only 60Hz, limiting its performance as a gaming monitor, but that was never AOC’s intention.

Seeing as the I1601FWUX works in sync with Windows 10’s native night mode, low blue mode feels a little redundant, as does overdrive mode — you’re not going to be doing any gaming on this, although you might want to watch the odd YouTube video. This is especially painful for multitaskers who are trying to get work done away from the office, as even the best laptop screen can't compete with the extra real estate of a second screen. If you want to crank up the brightness, adjust the contrast, change the language or do anything with the display at all, you press the power button once. After some troubleshooting, trying various hubs to connect the monitor, laptop, and signal generator, I checked the laptop's USB-C port to find that it supports data transfer only, not DisplayPort over USB. Above all, it is sturdy—it didn't collapse once, unlike some other portable-monitor stands I've tried. All in all, I'd rate this monitor as good for business documents and web surfing, and passable (though not ideal) for casual photo viewing and light video watching.
