The Astra Superior Platinum Blade is a perfect example why every shaver (especially starting out) should try as many blades as they can.

FWIW; I have a thick beard but sensitive facial skin, and the Astra platinums work fine for 3-5 shaves (2-pass) ASSUMING I prep things well and use a premium shave cream, like D.Built by Gillette in Russia, you know you’re getting a double razor blade of real shaving pedigree, made of cold, hard, durable metal. Either way you want to look at it, these blades are amazing at being sharp enough to deliver an amazingly close shave while being smooth enough to do it without causing a lot of irritation. But if you’re looking for a blade that is sharp but still can provide a smooth shave, then these are a great option to consider. The blade itself just says “ASTRA” across the top of the blade and “SUPERIOR PLATINUM” across the bottom.

The blade pulled excessively with my 1930 Gillette New, and left my face feeling raw for the rest of the day. If you need something sharper than what the Astra Superior’s can offer, your best bet is to go with Feather double-edge blades. Because the Astra Superior Platinum blades offer both excellent sharpness and smoothness properties, I think these blades are a great option for a wide variety of men. I personally did not like the Astra Superior Platinum and do not plan to try it again for personal use. In 1996 Astra razor blades joined the Gillette Company family in line with many privatisations of the time.

They can also be snapped in half, making them highly suitable for modern style shavettes which take two halves of a double edge blade. The Personna Lab Blue bladesare another great option of a blade that is above average in sharpness and smoothness. These might not be as sharp as a Feather or as smooth as a Shark or Derby, but they are well above average in both categories.
