About this deal

I know people think that sewing for teens is tricky, but honestly I love sewing for my teen daughter! I spend quite a lot of time on long train journeys and have to wear masks for long periods, so good quality material is so important to me. With the long edges of the main scrunchie sewn, we need to get the short ends right sides together so we can sew them next. But they can be a bit harder to sew because the pile makes them slip around underneath the sewing machine’s presser foot.

I like to put a second safety pin at the other end of the elastic to help keep it from sliding up into the tube. Start by pulling one end of the scrunchie down into the tube, pulling it through until it reaches the other end. Decide which of these you want and cut two pieces from: knot bow / mini knot bow / scarf /bunny ears.

Here's some eye candy for you from my new stash: Get the Notting Hill fabric collection by Riley Blake Designs here. Fold it right sides together lengthwise and sew from each narrow end towards the middle of the strip. You could rock a different one every day of the week or make one to match all your favourite outfits. PRO TIP: While sewing the elastic ends together is the best and strongest way to secure them, you can tie the ends together tightly in a double knot instead if you're in a hurry or having trouble with this step.

My goal is to make sewing and crafting easy and accessible for everyone, which is why I offer free patterns and easy-to-follow tutorials. Almost all steps can be completed with a sewing machine — there is only the tiniest bit of hand sewing required. This pattern doesn’t take shortcuts – so I can’t promise that it’s the fastest one out there on the internet. Having said this, a scrunchie will work with nearly any fabric, rayon, silk, velvet, plush, satin, chiffon - as I said, nearly whatever comes to your mind. But I can promise it will give you a scrunchie with a professional-level finish and no visible seams! Take the scrunchie to your sewing machine and sew across the ends of the elastic several times with a zigzag stitch. Here you will find inspiration for sewing, fun DIY projects, thoughtful gift ideas and simple living.

You can make these for different occasions or sporting events without spending a ton of money or time. I like how you are encouraging those new to sewing the different methods to choose from and giving them permission to take their time while making this project!

PRO TIP: It helps to pin the corners together first, then fill in the remaining length of fabric with pins.

Our mission is to make creativity accessible, enjoyable, and empowering for everyone with free patterns and step-by-step instructions. Recommended Fabrics; Stretch Velvet, Quilting Cotton, Voile, Chambray, Knit, Gauze, Silk, and Rayon. TIP: I find it’s easier to turn a tube right side out if I stitch across one of the short ends and then use a wooden towel pushed into that closed end to turn it right side out. Hi, I love the bunny ear tutorial and I have the PDF, but I was wondering if you made a tutorial on the bow? For this one, combine the small basic scrunchie piece with this Mini Knot Bow piece - both included in the free pattern! These short backstitches keep the seam from coming undone when you turn the scrunchie right side out. I made them to go into care packages for my friends, and they were so cute that I had to make an one extra for myself! And now I'm showing you how to spruce up a basic scrunchie: see how to make a diy scrunchie with bows, or knots, or tails, or even diy bunny ears!
