In my opinion, the 5000U is an upgrade on the 5610 in every way and made the 5610 redundant so I ended up selling it. The previous GW-5000-1 was a Japan-only model that was frequently bought by fans outside of Japan as an import, and the GW-5000U-1 with an updated module and LED light was initially available in Japan and Europe. The new white LED light is definitely easier for me to see in the pitch black with blurry eyes in the morning. The outer composite cover/case eventually disintegrated, but I sorted a replacement in Brazil, it looks like new, a watch made 33 years ago, looks like new!Like the early G-Shock models, it has a screw-lock case back and is one of the only current G-Shocks, along with the digital Frogman and GMW-B5000, with this type of build. Its extra-large size gives it even more protection than a typical G-Shock, and it is one of the toughest G-Shock models ever made. Kobayashi has been plenty generous in letting us use his photos for JDM watches that we can’t get pictures of ourselves.

Perfect for free diving without scuba gear: the watch is water resistant up to 20 bar according to ISO 22810. Shipped within an hour, some reviews don’t make positive reading but will make judgement on we the coming days based on my own experience. I haven’t babied it, it went to the first Gulf war, I’ve been diving, mountain biking, camping in all weathers and tombstoning with it, it just comes back for more, a brilliant watch.

Compared to the classic GW-5000, the "U" looks the same -- which I like -- because, how do you improve on perfection? But what I'm saying is that I think normal everyday affordability is an important facet of a classic square.Now that I have the watch, I don’t need his images for this article, but I’ll include one as a tip of the hat. I do prefer the dd/mm option and it’s a great watch, just the alarm is so quiet like all the solar atomics and the display on my 5610 looks perhaps a tiny bit clearer. In the week I’ve owned it, I’ve found multiple uses for the stopwatch, timer, and alarm functions as well.
