About this deal

This didn’t go down so well with the fleet, and to appease complaints that followed Vernon suggested the addition of limes and sugar to improve the drink - he became an accidental mixologist, and became known as Old Grog. However, the heavy spicing of the other Old J styles have been toned right down to allow the more subtle, un-aged white rum to shine.

Lemon sorbet in particular works great because of the acidity but you can also try coconut sorbet which I find to work great. A high-strength edition of Admiral Vernon's Old J Spiced Rum, which features plenty of vanilla and a touch of lime peel flavours at its core. It took over sixty trials before the perfect harmony of ingredients was found, and Old J’s smooth and spicy flavour profile was born. Oh, and whilst on the subject, if you do create any Old J cocktails, don’t forget to share them with me on here, my Instagram, or with Old J on there own Instagram so we can see your cocktail craftsmanship at work. Old J’s rum history begins in 1740, when Admiral Edward Vernon put in place a reduction in the strength of the British Navy’s rum ration. We’ll be using some tiki fire in the next cocktail so I’d recommend picking some up and trying this out.

According to the label, this was flavoured with vanilla and "aphotic spiced" - those of you familiar with oceanography will know that an aphotic zone is a part of an ocean where little to no light reaches. Fill a bowl with chocolate ice cream and drizzle (or glug) over some Old J cherry rum and oh my god are you in for a treat. Admiral Vernon's Old J Spiced Rum is a premium spirit made with Caribbean rum from Trinidad and Barbados. The origins of Old J date back to 1740, when an admiral decided to enforce a reduction in the British Navy's much-loved rum ration. Using the same pot-still, this pure, premium rum is crafted in the British Virgin Islands; aged in oak barrels between 12 and 24 months. When his men complained, Vernon suggested the addition of limes and sugar to make the drink more enjoyable. Blended with spices, sweet vanilla and Persian lime, it took over sixty trials before the right mix of ingredients was found and the smooth and spicy flavour profile was born. The thing about having something so high in alcohol (other then using it to flavour cherries) is that it can stand up to big flavours and balance perfectly.
