This didn’t go down so well with the fleet, and to appease complaints that followed Vernon suggested the addition of limes and sugar to improve the drink - he became an accidental mixologist, and became known as Old Grog. However, the heavy spicing of the other Old J styles have been toned right down to allow the more subtle, un-aged white rum to shine.

Lemon sorbet in particular works great because of the acidity but you can also try coconut sorbet which I find to work great. The thing about having something so high in alcohol (other then using it to flavour cherries) is that it can stand up to big flavours and balance perfectly.
