With that said, lotions and mousses are still easy to apply as long as you exfoliate beforehand and use a tanning mitt. The pre-application smell is a bit girly at first until the DHA smell takes over (and that doesn’t smell good on anyone, I don’t care how cute you are). You’ll also want to use a good exfoliator before you tan, to get rid of dead skin cells that may hinder a flawless finish or make it hard to apply smoothly. It’s a common misconception that fake tan isn’t for those with darker skin tones, but that’s definitely not true. When you think of self-tanners you might ususally think of thick, sometimes tricky to apply creams, but the Isle of Paradise tanning water does away with all the stickiness and instead comes in liquid form. It can also draw moisture from the lower layers of the skin to the surface layers but I wouldn’t think it’s in such high concentration to cause any drying. Glycerin, dimethicone and caramel all help to create a deeply hydrating formula, leading to softer, suppler skin as well as sunkissed in shade, which our tester truly loved. Those with darker or olive skin tones should avoid any orange tans and go for more of a violet-based tan to cancel out yellow undertones. Regular self-tanners may find it a bit too subtle, although it does make for a great daily top-up of a darker self tan, stretching the colour out for longer while adding a slight shimmer.

So, of course, we had to include St Tropez, one of the most famous fake tan brands around, and for good reason. As for applying an even tan on bumpy skin, Bolder has a top tip: “Apply your tan together with a light, oil-free moisturiser to buffer the depth of the colour, creating a natural glow on the surface and helping skin to stay hydrated (DHA can have a drying effect). Again, because the colour is so light, even if it does streak, it won’t be too noticeable, and a couple of extra applications should cover it up.Some tanners compromise on hydration, but this one injects some serious moisture into your skin using a combination of six essential oils, including raspberry seed, argan and jojoba. Having tested countless fake tans, the competition was incredibly tight, but these 11 stuck out as our favourite finds. Being a mousse, it’s best applied with a mitt and dries almost instantly, so you don’t have to waste time waiting around.
