About this deal

What I wanted people to get out of this book is a more realistic view of what hard work looks like and the justification to enjoy your work. The author’s blurb sounded impressive (which got me interested) however after a some basic internet digging, the blurb is an exaggerated white lie!

Pinpoints and unpacks the confusing and impossible messages we are all fed about modern work, how we are supposedly meant to be "nailing" all areas of our life all at once.I think this will speak to a lot of young people and can help to start changing the direction of how we see the workplace etc. I’m really looking forward to sitting down with Tasha today to talk about her time during the filming of Love Island, but also to explore life after leaving the Villa; whether the Love Island bubble has truly burst and her work to normalise her differences throughout everything that she does.

You’ll come away from each episode with actionable advice to help you achieve balance, success, and fulfilment whether you’re working hard, or hardly working. As someone who is partially self employed, a few of her ‘tips’ would come in useful for me I’m sure, but I can’t see these being actionable in most workplaces.

I’ve always looked up to grace as she was one of the first ‘influencers’ I ever followed and helped teach me about fitness and nutrition which I value a lot. Once described as ‘The Most Powerful Woman in Beauty’ Caroline Hirons is the Founder, presenter, best-selling Author and all-round figurehead within the skincare industry. One of the things I find really helpful for that is the Eisenhower matrix, which ranks things on importance and urgency and gives you a square where you can say, OK, these are the things that I need to be doing. The ‘hardly working’ section is also very repetitive and again reads like an essay just analysing her own definition of hardly working. In this top-charting podcast series, entrepreneur Grace Beverley breaks away from the conventional business podcast rhetoric - immersing us in the extraordinary journeys of people from all walks of life who have achieved remarkable success in unique fields.I loved Grace’s humour and writing style, it felt like a loving, at times tough love pep talk with a close friend over dinner. Not all tasks require the same level of concentration of you, and therefore, it is important to do what works for you and not necessarily what is recommended by others. Hit biþ … geornlic þæt mon heardlice gnide þone hnescestan mealmstan æfter þæm þæt he þence þone soelestan hwetstan on to geræceanne” (“It is necessary that a man rub hardly if he intends to turn the softest malmstone into the best whetstone”). please please please could you work on your interview style… you have incredible guests and they’re super interesting people with a lot to learn from and a lot of inspiration to give.

There's a lot of that that we've internalised from different industries, and I think that can be really, really harmful. The first couple of chapters I did agree with the criticism that it felt like an essay and that big words where being chucked in to up the word count.

The first 40 pages or so of the book were hard to get through personally due to the points mentioned beforehand, but I don't regret continuing to read it as it definitely gets better afterwards. I also see a lot of criticisms about her privilege, which she does acknowledge in the book but I don't think she should be invalidated to speak on hard work because she didn't study by candlelight in a third world country growing up. And the combination of these two ideas is the winner when it comes to how we learn the difference between busyness and productive, organised work. The ideas suggested although interesting seemed unrealistic - a quick glance online shows the author doesn't abide by the rules, leaving me wondering the overall value of the advice given. Really it should be 3 stars but the 4th is for the fact that it actually has given me some helpful productivity tips and it was incredibly well written.
